4WD INDICATOR light, not warning light

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, have been trying to find answers for this but no luck yet. So I recently got an R50 and absolutely love it, everything works great. When I first got, after shifting to all the 4WD options, after coming out of 4LO back to 2WD, my indicator light has been flashing. The light that shows the 4 tires and the lock. 4WD seems to work just fine, it’s just this light constantly flashes the other lights that aren’t activated. For example, when I am driving around in 2WD, the front tires and lock lights flash. When you shift into Auto, the tires light up but the lock flashes. When you shift to 4WD, the lights are light up as they should be.

It kind of seems like an electric issue and not a transfer case since it still works but could be wrong. I’m just curious if anyone else has run into this and knows the fix, no one likes flashing lights on the dash.

Yes, oil is good, transmission is good. Engine light is on but it’s from an evap code and tpms light is on. Everything works as should.

It's the microswitch on the side of the transmission, or the circuits leading to it. Mine is on permanently because of the same issues, I have a new switch and plug, just haven't got around to changing it out.

Can you tell me what part that is, I’ve never heard of that before

Get yourself the oem repair manual and follow the diagnostic procedure on page tf-62 and tf-63. This will make your 4wd light flash a number of times and then repeat. The number of time if flashes will give you the code you need in order to know what is wrong using pages tf-64 and 65. If you don't have the manual, I can put it here if you need.

I used this procedure in order to find the issue I was having and it turned out to be my neutral-4low switch on the transfer case. Easy to change and everything went back to normal. but you need to know the code or else you're just shooting in the dark.

I got the code for
ATP switch, wait detection switch or

neutral-4LO switch circuit*

So I’m guessing it is the neutral 4LO switch. What part did you get and from where?

On my side I received the 10 code which specifically pointed to the neutral-4lo switch... I assume you got the 18 code which could also be the neutral-4lo switch but it could be one of the other 2 also... so If I were you i would start with checking continuity between the different switches by checking pins 40, 25 and 43 directly on the tcu connector. It should be pretty easy, just follow the instruction page tf-115.  disconnect the tcu connector, key off, and start checking continuity and you will get to the bottom of which switch has failed.  Here the procedure from tf-115 .

The tcu is inside the truck (see TF-49 (I))

( you could also go directly at the switches underneath the truck at the transfer case and start testing also there (see TF-149 at the bottom and tf-150)

Operate 4WD shift switch and check continuity between the following terminals.

Continuity:

Terminal 40 (ATP switch) and body ground “4H” position: No continuity should exist.

Between “4H” and “4LO”: Continuity should exist.

“4LO” position: No continuity should exist.

Terminal 25 (Neutral-4LO switch) and body ground“4H” position: No continuity should exist.

“4LO” position: Continuity should exist.

Terminal 43 (Wait detection switch) and body ground“4H” position: No continuity should exist. (*1)“4LO” position: Continuity should exist

Once you know which switch is bad, then you can start looking for the parts... comeback here with the results and i'll help you find it.

I had the 4WD light come up on my dash as well, but it wasn't flashing. I ended up replacing all the external parts, such as the transfer case motor, transfer case actuator, and 4WD ECU. The only components I didn't replace were the two switches, but that didn't matter because there was an issue with the interior of the transfer case itself. I couldn't switch from 4-wheel to 2-wheel drive it was like it was in 4x4 full time just like the old Land Rover Discovery's and Toyota 80 Series. In the end, I replaced the transfer case, and now everything works as it should. I hope that's not the case for you; it sounds like one of your switches might have failed, which is a relatively easy fix.

Another strange issue my old transfer case had was that I could be parked and shift into neutral to switch between 2WD, Auto, 4Hi, and 4Lo, and all the lights on the dash indicated that I was in the correct mode. However, as soon as I shifted into either reverse, drive, or park, the orange 4WD light would come on. I never took the old transfer case apart to see what was wrong with it inside.

If you found the issue, it would be nice for you to update your findings.. everyone could benefit from it.

I have not found/fixed yet. Almost positive it is the 4LO switch but will update when I get to it
