Hey everyone, I've been searching online for aftermarket recovery options for the R50 Pathfinder, but I haven't found much. The only thing I came across was some recovery hooks https://meanmother.com.au/collections/tow-hooks/products/tow-hook-yellow. Has anyone used these before? If so, how do you mount them to the front, and are they effective for front recovery? Aside from creating something in CAD, I can't find any other options.

Hey everyone, I’m in the process of replacing all the bushings on my R50 Pathfinder. Most, if not all, of them are the same rubber parts that were used when the vehicle was made in Japan 25 years ago. I had my local mechanic replace the control arm bushings earlier this year, but I want to start doing some of the work myself. My local tire shop mentioned that my rear sway bar link is shot and that both the rear and front sway bar D-rubbers need to be replaced. I want to know if there’s anything else I need to do besides jacking up the 4WD to take the wheels off. Will I need a wheel alignment after I replace these parts?

4WD INDICATOR light, not warning light
pathy200086 replied to chigen's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I had the 4WD light come up on my dash as well, but it wasn't flashing. I ended up replacing all the external parts, such as the transfer case motor, transfer case actuator, and 4WD ECU. The only components I didn't replace were the two switches, but that didn't matter because there was an issue with the interior of the transfer case itself. I couldn't switch from 4-wheel to 2-wheel drive it was like it was in 4x4 full time just like the old Land Rover Discovery's and Toyota 80 Series. In the end, I replaced the transfer case, and now everything works as it should. I hope that's not the case for you; it sounds like one of your switches might have failed, which is a relatively easy fix. Another strange issue my old transfer case had was that I could be parked and shift into neutral to switch between 2WD, Auto, 4Hi, and 4Lo, and all the lights on the dash indicated that I was in the correct mode. However, as soon as I shifted into either reverse, drive, or park, the orange 4WD light would come on. I never took the old transfer case apart to see what was wrong with it inside. -

R50 Tire Carrier Mod: Let's settle this!
pathy200086 replied to hawairish's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Since my 4WD system is back in action, I am now focusing on making my own rear wheel carrier. Getting an OEM one in Australia is nearly impossible, and I’ve wanted to create one for several years. During that time, I came across a CAD drawing someone made for a rear wheel carrier for the R50 Pathfinder. Does anyone know if that drawing is still available? I’ve searched online but can't seem to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -
So for once I actually have something positive to write, I got my self another Transfer Case from are wreaked 2002 R50 pathfinder my local mechanic got it installed yesterday and my 4WD systems is working the way it's meant to know which means I can start hitting trails again, thanks for the help and information Slartibartfast much appreciated.

that's actually are really good idea something like a Mitsubishi pajero or Toyota 4 runner of the same era might be similar in size all I would have have to make is a mount to fit the carrier to the pathfinder. -
R50 Tire Carrier Mod: Let's settle this!

I did find this place which seems to be in the US and Australia https://www.coastaloffroadbumpers.com.au/shop/r50-nissan-pathfinder-high-clearance-rear-bumper-kit-1710#attr=1153,1159,1160,1162,3563,1168,8249 It comes as a kit that you have to weld together yourself. When you add everything up, it totals $3,016.28 Australian dollars, which is more than the value of my Pathfinder. I’m pretty sure that price doesn’t include shipping. I think the most realistic and cost-effective option would be to make my own carrier, unless I can find one for a bargain from the States. -

In hopes of reigniting an old discussion, are there any Australians with R50 Pathfinders who know where I could find an OEM wheel carrier? I've heard these are hard to find in the US, so I'm wondering what the chances are of locating one in Australia. I started my search back in 2013 and have been looking on and off ever since, but I still haven't found one. I did see someone in New Zealand who managed to put an OEM carrier on their R50 Pathfinder, but having one shipped from the US would likely be quite expensive I have thought about making my own rear wheel carriers which is turning out to be the only option i do have a welder so how hard could it be As I laughed nervously to myself. -
After reviewing several transfer cases, I realized that the one I was considering didn't match my vehicle. I'm glad I didn't go through with the purchase. I reached out to the wrecker who supplied my transfer case motor, and he was able to find my exact transfer case. He used my VIN and instructed me to look for a smaller metal plate located below the larger plate next to my brake booster. We matched the number associated with the part for my Auto Transfer I cant remember exactly what it said but all the numbers matched with mine. He confirmed that the transfer case was from a 2001 R50 Pathfinder with a 4WD dial. I was able to purchase it for $1,010 plus shipping. My mechanic quoted me about $300 to $400 for labor to take the old transfer out and put the other one in, bringing the total to around $1,410. This is a great deal compared to the $8,000 to $9,000 I was quoted for rebuilding my original transfer case. Hopefully, after installing this new transfer case, all of my issues will finally be resolved. It can't be much else, so fingers crossed that everything works properly again. I'm eager to get back to the dirt tracks and camping, but this time, I'll be sure to avoid any water.

I found a second-hand transfer case motor and took it to the mechanics today. They informed me that the old motor had fried and was blowing a fuse. They installed the new motor and replaced the fuse, and now it works, but the motor spins freely. They suggested that there might be an issue with the spur gear inside the transfer case itself. The 4WD ECU is functioning properly, and the shift actuator that engages 4HI and 4LOW is also working. The two switches near the transfer case motor are operational, but it seems to be stuck in 4WD, which corresponds to the "Auto" setting on the dial. The mechanics assured me that as long as I avoid engaging the free-wheeling hubs on anything other than dirt roads, I should be able to drive it normally without causing any damage. They mentioned that I would be better off getting a second transfer case and transferring all the external parts from mine to the new one, as that would be the cheaper option. I found a transfer case on eBay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195794492658?chn=ps&_ul=AU&google_free_listing_action=view_item&gQT=2, and I'm planning to send the seller my VIN to ensure it’s the right one. I'm not sure if it's an ATX14A or TX10A; can you tell just by looking at it?

Thank you for the information, Slartibartfast! This is really helpful. I'll compare the R50 and R51 to see if I notice any differences. I'm not very experienced with these things, but I'll give it a try. If all else fails, I might have to look for an R51 transfer motor and hope it works! I should have mentioned why I posted this from the start. A few years ago, during a camping trip, I drove my Pathfinder into really deep water. Long story short, it stopped and flooded the inside, but somehow, the engine remained unscathed. Last year, I was planning another camping trip, but my Pathfinder wouldn’t shift into 4LO. I discovered that the ECU and the 4WD actuator on the side of the transfer case were damaged. It took me a while, but I managed to find some second-hand spare parts, got them fitted, and thought I was back in action. Fast forward to the present day: I decided to engage the 4WD since it had been three months since I last engage to keep the gears lubed up. Here’s the procedure I follow when engaging 4WD: Since I have free-wheeling hubs, I start by switching them from 4x2 to 4x4. Then, I jump into the Pathfinder, start it up, put my foot on the brake, shift to Neutral (N), and turn the dial from 2WD to Auto, then to 4Hi. The lights on the dash indicate that I’m in 4Hi, and when I switch to 4Lo, that light comes on as well. I can hear it switch between 4Hi and 4LOW, but when I shift from N to either Drive, Park, or Reverse, the orange 4WD light comes on. If I ignore that and drive it forward and backward. It’s definitely in 4LOW, but that light has me worried. I suspect the issue is with the transfer case motor. When I took it to the mechanic, he removed that motor and found it caked with mud and corrosion. He cleaned it up as best he could but recommended replacing it soon if I plan to go off-road. To make matters worse, since I tried to engage the 4WD the other day, I think it may be stuck in 4Hi, even though the dash says I’m in 2WD. It feels different, and the steering seems heavier than normal. It could all be in my head, and it might actually be in 2WD. I also have a very slight leak in my steering rack, which I'm getting looked at on the 24th of this month.

I also have no idea what the part number is since I cant see it on mine anymore there was a sticker on but it's long gone since it's 25 years old now.

Hello, I would like to get some information about a Transfer Case Motor. I have uploaded a picture of what it looks like this isn't mine the picture is from google. My vehicle is a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder with a VG33E engine. It has a dial that switches between 2WD, Auto, 4Hi, and 4Low. However, I'm not sure which type of 4WD Transfer Case it has. My question is whether this Transfer Case Motor was used in newer models. I’ve seen it labeled on other Nissans, such as https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256444199287?_trksid=p4375194.c101949.m162918, which mentions it fits the 2005-2015 Nissan Armada and the 2005-2010 QX56 Pathfinder. It looks the same as mine. Could anyone with more knowledge help clarify if it would fit? Thank you

Transfer Case Module replacement
pathy200086 replied to pathy200086's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I have considered converting my vehicle to a manual transfer, but the amount of work involved is overwhelming. Unfortunately, I am not skilled enough to do it myself and there are no shops near me that would take on the task. I am hoping to find the right transfer case module, but it seems like a long shot. It might be best to cut my losses and replace my vehicle, even though I really don't want to. It's starting to look like one of those 'if all the stars align' situations -

Yeah I'm really surprised I didn't kill the engine, I heard the VG33E is pretty reliable I didn't really believe it until that day -
Transfer Case Module replacement
pathy200086 replied to pathy200086's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Do you happen to know if the transfer case control module for the R50 Pathfinder is the same for all Pathfinders that are equipped with the VG33E engine? I have come across many transfer case control modules online, but the first five numbers on the part number are the same, while the last five numbers are different on most of them. They do mention that these modules are for 2005 models and up, so I am assuming they are meant for the VQ35DE engine and might not be compatible with mine. -
Hello everyone, I've been a long time lurker but this is my first post. Let me give you a bit of background information to help with the topic I'm about to discuss. I've owned a 2000 R50 Series 2 VG33E Pathfinder for about 13 years. It's an amazing 4WD and my first car. I've spent a lot of time over the years upgrading it bit by bit. Living in Australia, there isn't much aftermarket support for the R50 Pathfinder, so getting parts has been difficult. Back in 2022, I was out camping with a few mates and made the stupid decision to cross a rather large section of water on the way to the campsite. Long story short, I misjudged how deep it was and what the bottom was like. I should have walked it, but I didn't, and my pride and joy got stuck and filled with water. By some miracle, my engine survived, but both diffs were filled with water, and my car put itself into limp mode. I ended up getting it to the blacktop and got the old girl towed home. It took me the better part of a month to clean the mud out of the inside. Fast forward to one month ago, I was planning another camping trip, but when I tried to test 4low, it wouldn't engage. I have Warn free-wheeling hubs, so I took it to an auto electrician, and they found that my transfer case module was full of mud and corrosion. It turns out the module was destroyed. I wanted to know if the transfer case module is the same for all years with the R50 Pathfinder that has the VG33E engine, or are they different? Can I use a module from a different model 4WD with the same engine? I have linked a few pictures of mine. https://photos.app.goo.gl/NZq9DocHzDwZQTQQ7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/vmQQLPsszmnPMaFp7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/3fXHs3jQkAFvvTWw9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/tqZ9BmJyY76kYPp96
