Help. Only have reverse and first gear. Vss, revolution sensor?

Hi, first post here, so go easy on me, lol.

 

A little about my rig,

I received a free 1991 pathfinder se 4×4 automatic with 350,000 km on it. The transmission was already broken, so i don't know the story of how it stopped shifting.

 

I checked the fluid and it was bad, so I flushed it with new atf. I found a wire that was sitting on the exhaust manifold burning, so i spliced the wire, fixed and cleaned the wiring harness up. I read a bit of the 1990 fsm as there is no 1991 fsm that i can find. So i did one of the troubleshooting tests and it came back with the revolution sensor being unplugged or damaged. And now i am trying to figure out where it is exactly. I've been looking at various diagrams and every one is different. Some say its on the side of the tranny, some say its on the side of the transfer case. Then some say its on the top of the transfer case, and some say its on the top of the tranny. I believe its either on the side of the tranny (that one doesn't have the 10mm bolt though, its a 19mm, never pulled it out yet), or on the top of the tranny. There is nothing on the transfer case that i can see that would resemble it. I can't see the top of the tranny to confirm that its there. Im just scratching my head here.

 

So now for the questions....

 

Could it be the 19mm nut sensor?

 

If its on the top of the tranny, how would i go about changing it? Drop the tranny? Or can i go through the floor of the cab near the shifter?

 

I would prefer to do it myself as money is tight. I have the necessary tools to do the job, maybe not the right place however, the gravel sucks to lay on, lol. Cardboard helps. If all else fails, I'll take it to a shop, just have to give it an honest effort.

 

Any help with this matter would be great.

Thr revolution sensor is on the transfer case adapter I think or on the tranny Held in by a 10mm bolt. It's no 19mm bolt for sure. The transmission diagnostics is very similar If not the same as the 94 so you can use the fsm for that. It's possible that you could have burned clutches. Did you see any metal shavings?

That is the weird thing. There were no metal shavings in the pan. Just old ATF. It shifts into reverse and first gear smoothly. It just wont shift any higher. I was reading the 92 fsm today and said if the vss and revolution sensor are not working, all you will get is first gear. Maybe both sensors are bad? Or maybe its the harness connector? I'll have a peak at the harness connector.

O.k. i kind of figured that out. I have done two self diagnosis tests. One to check the vss, which looks like its good. And the other test came up with a bad revolution sensor. So where would be the revolution sensor be located? I believe that the revolution sensor is held in with a 10mm bolt as well. At least it was on the nissan car i saw on YouTube. The vss has a pinion on it and the revolution sensor is just a little stubby thing. Both i believe are on the tranny or the tcase.

Hmm, ya i read that today. The picture gives me a way better idea on where it is exactly. Thanks. I appreciate it.

 

I don't want to move that crossmember if i don't have to. But if i must. Im just wondering if i could get at it from inside of the vehicle instead, through the shifter area. It would make it alot easier that way.

 

Mind you that the 6 bolts wouldn't be too bad and i have a decent jack that would work.

 

Should i try to go from above? Would there be enough room do you think?

 

What's your thoughts on that?

I'm not sure you could, I have replaced a trans in these trucks and have had the interior apart completely. Last time I looked there wasn't really a direct access "hole" in that area. I mean maybe if you tear the console/shifter/handbrake and their mounts out, but it is probably easier to just lower the trans down a bit.

Well, that was fun.....not.

 

I got it out. I don't have the replacement yet, maybe on the weekend. I have to search for one next. Hopefully pick one up on payday. I put everything back together for now, except the sensor, of course.

 

So, the break down on what i did so far.

 

I took out the crossmember with a jack under the tcase. The crossmember was held up by 14mm bolts/nuts. I lowered the jack as far as i could without letting it hang freely. I needed all of the room i could, it was really tight. I don't know how I'm going to get the sensor back in. Well i can get it back in, but the 10mm bolt might be hard to line up. I might check the floor and see if thats possible while i wait till payday, nothing else to do other than wait. And maybe check the ohms of the sensor to see if it failed. I didn't actually remove it from the pathy yet, its just hanging there for the night. I covered the hole it came from with a Ziploc bag for the time being. If it wasn't held on by some wire clips, I would have taken it out. It could just hang out for now.

 

Thats all i have to report. Until next time, maybe tomorrow, if i can access the area through the floor. From under the pathy, it seems like i can remove a large piece of the floor. But, time will tell. I have to clean under the console anyways. There's my excuse to get under there. Haha.

It was the one on the very top, middle. I haven't found a replacement yet. I found some online, trying to find one in town before i resort to buying it online.
