Probelems locating a transmission

My sons 2002 pathfinder lost reverse the other day. He is leaving forthe marines so was hoping to have it fixed when he got back home. Did lots of research and see the radiator breaking internally is a problem as well as other causes. Shops are quoting $4,000 to fix it, I have a shop and build race cars so decided to just find a wrecked donor and do a swap....if he gets back and wants to keep it we can rebuild one of the two transmissions for a long term solution. Now I'm having trouble locating a transmission, lots of them out there (Re4R01A) but all the salvage yards are saying they won't fit. It's a SE model built in 01/02 with the manual shift 4wd (separate gear shift on the console, not push button). So what are the differences is the 2001/2002 that would keep me from swapping? I would think if I find the Trans from that year range and same model number I can even swap the transfer case over if I had to (since many I find are electric shift). New to Nissan so I must be missing something...tried the search but can't find this specific information. Thanks for your help!

Do you have the 3.5l? If you do they beefed up the internals. So I would not recommend using from a 3.3l. As long as the transmission came from a manual shift and a 3.5l it is the same for all I know right now. I may be wrong so someone might have to correct me if so.

Rebuild is not hard once you start taking it apart.

Thanks, I've found a couple from 3.5l (one was electric and one is manual shift 2001 model)...it appears the transfer case just bolts on the rear so wasn't even sure if the manual vs electric shift would matter...maybe it would confuse the transmission computer behind the stereo). I've done powerglides and turbo 350/400 gm transmissions so have some experience but all the electric shift servos in there scare me (mainly not sure how to troubleshoot them). When I talked to the salvage places they said they have the manual shift Trans for the 2002 pathfinders but only up to 7/01 manufacture date and they won't work for me...not sure why that is.

Ok, so what I gather is any Re4Ro1a will work as long as it's from a 3.5 liter 4wd pathfinder? If so that should be easy, I found a lot of 2001 model year 3.5 pathfinder doners at the salvage yards with working (tested) transmissions.
