My transmision started giving me problems a while back, didn´t want to run in Drive i had to shift to 2nd so it would run and after a while i could switch back to Drive and it would run perfect.

So i started looking for a replacament and had no luck finding one specially were i live (i´m for mexico) but today just my luck i found a donar truck a 91 XE V6 5 Speed Manual tranny ( mines a 92 XE V6 Automatic) same Engine Model VG30E, i don´t know much of the donar truck other then that.

So i have i few question, doubts, and suggestion..

so what from what i been reading it is possible the tranny swap, right?

and if it is what parts are require to be swap?

are this good transmision, the 5 speed?

what should i look for to see if it´s in good condition?

and is it worth it?

PS.

i´m no mechanic so take it easy with me and that is why im asking this question

but i am really excited about this, ill start the process next week and i´m not doing the swap because i have no time.

It's been done. Probably easiest to get the whole donor truck if you can so that you don't have to keep running back for brackets and things. Otherwise, just look for stuff that's different... one less-obvious thing I'd take a close look at is the center console and the plate below it that goes over the trans tunnel, I think those are different.

There are two weak spots for the five speed. One is that Nissan put the oil fill hole a little too low to keep some of the bearings happy. There's a TSB on overfilling them that's supposed to solve the issue. If this hasn't been done, and it's got a lot of miles on it, it might need a rebuild. (If you can test-drive the donor, listen for a whining noise.) The other issue is that the synchros can't handle modern GL-5 oils, so you have to be careful what you fill it with or you'll shred the synchros. Other than that, from what I've read, they sound like pretty good boxes.

Okey i´ll take a look at the center console. I didn´t check the miles on the truck but i´ll take a look at it and i´m not getting the hold donor truck because the guy that has it told me he would the the job of switching out the transmision, he has a little shop so i guess i´m good there but i was thinking of getting it.

The bad thing is i can´t test drive the donor truck the guy took some parts from the engine and is setting on bricks, has no tires on so no luck there and the guy that has it bought it for parts.

One question, when you say lots of miles what is the approximately number of miles for rebuilding the transmision?

Other then that recommend using GL-4 oils or under, thanks for the suggestion and information much help.

I´m still looking for a automatic tranny but if i can´t find it this week i´ll do the manual tranny swap.

AFAIK there's no set rebuild interval on these. Probably depends more on how it was treated than on the odometer reading, and I don't have the hands-on with this box to really say more than that.

Might give this a read-through as well, to get an idea of what you (or the guy installing the trans for you) is in for: :clickdalink:

Edit: This might shed some light on what to look out for.
