Clutch slipping, time for a new one.

Hi everybody!

 

New to this forum, but I expect I'll be pretty active on here over the next few years. Good to see some info about mathbinders still exists.

 

Anyway, the reason I made this thread. my 98 stick-shift is slipping at high-gear/speed when I push on the gas. I looked around a bit and found out that it means the clutch is losing it's surface material and it's going to disappear real fast now that it's started.

 

I'm not sure what to look for as a replacement though, I called to a few shops around town and nobody has anything in stock, and even if they did, I'm looking at $1000+ just to get it fixed professionally. I'm left with no choice but to buy one online and do it myself, but I'm not too confident about opening up the underside and pulling things out.

 

So what I'm looking for is recommendations on what kind of kit to buy, and some basic instructions on how to install it.

The local Nissan Dealership is out of stock clutch disks, pressure plates, pilot bushing and throw out bearings?

Well, you remove the transmission, take out the old parts, put the new ones in...

And... Go to the Garage section and download the FSM from the pinned thread, then start reading...

 

You will need to remove the drive shafts, a cross member, the shifter, all wires, the engine bolts with long extensions/universals and help of a friend, a tranny jack is recommended, consider replacing your rear main seal, the flywheel as well, replace the clutch parts using a clutch alignment tool, and then put it all back together.

It isn't as bad as it sounds, just read up do you understand the process then ask about what you need answers on.

It is a ton of work, you can find aftermarket clutch parts. But if you are already slipping you need to open her up and see what is shot.

The big concern is if your flywheel is scored, that adds another 60 bucks or so.

 

Also the clutch is hydraulic, so take a look at your cylinder and the condition of the fluids if you have it ripped apart and they are iffy you can do them too.
