wheel bearing replacement

Hey I'm trying to replace my wheel bearings for the first time and I've hit a snag. In the picture should I be trying to remove the small dust cap or the metal cover that the dust cover sits on with the smaller bolts sticking out? I took the nuts off the bolts and I can't for the life of me get that cover off. Am I doing something wrong? thanks for your help.

Thanks, just needed a little more persuasion. I finally got the passenger side all back together. But when I went to to put the brake mount back on a brake pad fell out. I put it back in with the metal clips the way I thought they were supposed to go but now the brake sounds like it's rubbing on the disc. I've never worked on the brakes can someone confirm the way they're supposed to be?

Honestly, look at the other side. It might not be convenient, but it is accessable and will make more sense when you see it.

One of the 10 commandments of mechanics, only dismantle one side at a time. ;)

No, when you release the brake pedal, it eases up the pressure on the calipers and obviously, the brake pads as well. They retract slightly and any runout of the rotor (they all have some) will actually kick the pads away as well. This is assuming the slide pins are smooth, clean and lubricated. In all reality, most disk brake systems are just a few hairs away from dragging all the time, it's the pressure of braking that creates the heat.

Thanks for the info. The slide pins seemed smooth. Got it all back together and braking is good. It does just touch the rotors though when I spin by hand. I guess that's how it's supposed to be. Pads and rotors will have to wait till next summer.

 

Has anyone ever repacked the rear bearings? Are they supposed to be done as well?
