Fan Clutch

Ok, see if this is what I think it is. I am having loud noise in my engine area but nothing seems wrong with it, it accelerates good, and gauges are good. I mostly hear the noise when air temp is cold. I just got the tranny rebuilt and I thought it was that. But the noise is in the engine area. So I did a search on here for noise in engine and came away with Fan Clutch noise. That sounds more like what I am experiencing. Problem is not sure how to repair it, so I went to youtube and watch a guy change his. Please let me know if it is similar to what this guy is doing and that easy.

Also why does he drain his anti-freeze?

Do I need any special tools?

I think you need to remove the drive belt, then the fan shroud, unbolt the fan, then just unbolt the fan clutch:

See LC-9 for torque specs. Use a 1/4" drive torque wrench and use inch pounds instead of foot pounds that the manual says (use Google to convert; i.e. "4.3 foot pounds = ? inch pounds" will tell you). The bolts are probably all 10mm.

Download a copy of the factory service manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/pathfinder/1995_Pathfinder/

There are a few aftermarket options for a fan clutch on RockAuto, or you can get an OEM one for $130.

You don't need to remove anything but the fan. Just four nuts need to come off, 10 mm wrench works, fan can slip out of the shroud. I wouldn't worry about the torque too much... I just put mine on at a reasonable torque and I've never had it loosen.

Take the fan off, reinstall the nuts (might need washers), they hold the pulley on. Then run the engine. If your noise is gone, it was the fan clutch. Don't run it long because you have no air cooling (or at least watch the temp gauge).

Well I replaced the fan clutch, it was not that hard. Only problem was I forgot to get a socket set, so once I took it out I had to wait for my brother to bring a socket set to me. Now I have to wait for a cold day and see if that was the noise I was hearing. Thanks all for helping me with this.
