FUEL LINE LEAK

Recommended Posts

Well, it looks like my 15 year old Pathy is starting to show some wear. I definitely have a fuel leak which looks like from just rusted lines. It drips about once every two seconds! Has anyone else had this issue before and does anyone anticipate about how much will it cost to fix???

The leak seems to be past the fuel filter and up past the rubber exhaust hanger to a group of 4 lines.

I can give a way to find it but repair depends on location.

You will have to crawl under there and and wipe the lines clean, and make sure they are dry.

Wrap a bit of toilet paper around each line and watch to see if your leak appears.

If not turn the engine over a couple of times to get fuel n the lines.

Check again and you should have the location.

The bad news if one is that rusted out the rest are probably close behind, so you will need to replace the lot.

BUT for the short term you could cut the line, use a pipe cutter not a hacksaw, remove the holed section and put some rubber fuel line in the gap. But that assumes the leak is somewhere you can get at the line to cut it.

If not you could use Seals All around the hole and then slice piece of rubber fuel line and place over the hole, slit away from the hole :) and use a couple of hose clamps to hold the line closed.

Are those rusty break lines behind that rubber hose? That would have me concerned too. In the mean time, I hope nobody stops by your rig in some parking lot and lights up a smoke!

I Know, it's a temporary fix for now. It's not a daily driver. I'm gonna attempt to carefully wire brush with a cordless drill to clean up underneath, and under coat what ever I can.

Well my temporary fix needs to be fixed again.....my fuel lines need to be replaced. I priced a New Factory OEM send and return line, pretty reasonably priced at around $30 each......now here's the dilemma, shipping is $250 . Since the lines are one solid piece that spans almost the whole length of the truck, it's a pretty long box. I don't know if I'd be willing to pay that much. My other option is to cut out the metal lines and replace with nylon tubbing and just zip tie them up to the rusty lines. I know I'm eventually gonna have to do the same with the rear brake lines too!

Anyone else have problems with rusted fuel lines?

$250 sounds pretty crazy. For that price, maybe you could get straight tubing, and a bender, and do it yourself, if you're comfortable with that. And you'd know that you've got more between you and not stopping/bursting into flames than some hoses and zip ties.
