A/C Fan Making Noise

The A/C fan is making noise on my 01 Pathfinder. It started months ago but it would only make a noise when I was hard on the brakes. Now its a constant sound. It is not related to the compressor. It gets louder when going from fan speed 1 to 2. The car has auto climate control. Any suggestions as to how to fix it? Its rather annoying.

Not sure about the brake connection, and what possible effect that would have on your A/C-heater fan, but if your's is like most Pathy's and H/B trucks, it sounds like you have leaves that have gotten down into your fresh-air ducts from the cowling. When this happens on mine, the higher you put the fan output the louder they are... 'til you grind them up & shoot them out all over your interior that is... :P Maybe braking allows them to slide in the ducting until they contact the edge of your fan blades ? Anybody else hazard a guess ?

I bet you are right about the leaf thing. The car is parked outside and it constantly has leaves/pine straw building up where the a/c air intake is. Where do these leaves build up? I replaced the in-cabin microfilter a while back - is the fan assembly in there?

in-cabin microfilter

My, aren't we fancy ? I think mine's located next to my hypo-allergenic discombobulator interflow unit... Seriously, I've no idea as to where in the line between outside vent to your heater-A/C blower the microfilter is. Sorry I can't help you there. The blower is down under your dash against the firewall, I would guess, just like they've been mounting them forever. Now that I think about it, I've got a couple bugging me, too...... sssh

Edit: "in-cabin microfilter" ~ I guess that tells me where it is... Evidently it's the last line of defense for all that nasty mobile real estate that everybody finds in their rig ~ me included ~ but that's Az. for ya... besides, I've got an '87, we don't need no stinkin' microfilters ! :P
