how to on changing to mpfi distributor

I'm sure someone wrote one (My1path) but I can't find it. I think it was Nunya that said a Quest distributor will work too. Right now there are two quest (93 & 97) and two pathys (94 & 95) in the pick a part that all have distributors so I cant resist grabbing a few for future projects. Do I just need the distributor? Any other parts I should pull? The quest have a little sensor plugged in right next to the hold down bolt, anyone know what that is for?

I will go yank both pathy distributors today because they usually go fast, y'all let me know what else I need to go back for.

Take the dizzy, cap, rotor, wires (left bank ones won't reach rightfrom the tbi set), and DON'T FORGET when you pull the distributed there will be a small plate under it held on with 2 bolts. TAKE THAT! It's what the distributer adj bolt mounts and is different from the tbi dizzy. Otherwise the Quest one at least has the same plugs and all. :aok:

Is there a MPFI swap in your future!? If so, let me know how it works out. I'm weighting my options in that department too. I read through the post, regarding making the Z31 intake swap, and although it looked like it worked for him. It seems like way too much work for me. That guy should get some kind of award and an advanced degree in engineering and patients for what he went through ! lol. Are you considering the MPI swap to improve the mileage or because of the 'dated' efficiency of the TBI system?

Thanks Nunya for the quick response, you rock! I had remembered the plate and having to dent the valve cover too. Just wasn't sure if I needed the coil and any other small parts.

I would like to swap to the mpfi in the future but with a 3.3, the efficiency of this TBI setup sucks. My brother had the same setup on a 86.5 2wd hardbody that was much more efficient. The only difference I see is the gearing wasn't as low on the hardbody. It had way more get up and go too. I will have to see about getting hold of a donner truck for the 3.3 swap though and move everything over. This dizzy swap is just because these guys say its a better distributer.

Converting To A 90-95 Distributor

 

FR this is not just for a MPFI swap, its to take advantage of a better designed verical cap (no paths cross inside the cap) and a larger point separation to avoid arcing and misfire when using upgraded ignition systems.

 

You can use a quest dizy but I think your defeating half the point if its one of those flat style caps.

I think the little thing that plugs into the prong on the top/side of the distributor is just a ground. The large plug is the crank angle sensor...

 

as stated in my other thread, that is not a ground. It can be grouned but it is not.

I belive its a low volt positive charge to keep the spark from arcing to ground and causing a misfire...

Nunya's right they are exactly the same even the plastic cover that goes over the wires. I grabbed two distributors so I would have a spare. One from a 97 quest and one from a 94 pathy. The only visible difference is the metal tab that holds the wiring harness to the bottom is in a different position making the wire a little shorter.

The sensor I mentioned earlier was bolted to the block not the distributer. The pathy I pulled the distributor from had a sensor just like it bolted to the intake plenum right behind the coil. Makes me think it is a knock sensor.

Also I remember someone stating that the throttle body on the 4 cyl was the same as the V6, so I grabbed one of these too off of an 87 truck. I also grabbed an extra set of tail lights for insurance. As long as I have a set on the shelf I will never break one.

A throttle body, two distributors and two tail lights right under $80, I love pick a parts!

How do you tell the difference between the plug that goes on there and the one that goes to the AC compressor? I don't have AC (but I still have the plug) so I can't just check to see if my AC doesn't work to see if I switched them up...

The wire for the a/c is a plastic plug that is made to mate with another plastic plug. The one for the dizzy is a soft rubber covered plug with no locking tabs to mate with another plug.

Ah, thanks. Ok, I have the wrong wire hooked up then.

 

The plastic part on the one I connected is broken so I couldn't tell.
