NATO jerry cans

I have a pre-carb NATO jerry can that I'm going to take with me on my next trip. To save on space I was wondering if these can be stored on their sides (the large side) without leaking?

How is the seal? I wouldn't trust it laying down on its side. I can't really see how much space it would save you either way.

I will be replacing the seal with a brand new one. I want to mount it on the roof-rack (Garvin wilderness, 4" height) but dont want to buy an expensive mounting system for it just yet.

If I laid it on its side it would keep the profile low and I could lash it down much more securely.

I see them layed down on their rear edge alot too...as in the vertical edge on theopposite side of the spout

I've got one of those too, it seals pretty well. When it gets cold the sides suck in and I have to open it. I haven't found a spout that doesn't leak yet.
