I just put a brand new alt/fan belt on my 95 pathy i have it tightened and everything but when the fan engages the belt slips and squeals but belt is tight and fan and fan clutch turn freely... What could be causing this? :scratchhead: Note that my old belt did not slip till the day it snapped..

thanks for the very good description. He means there is a light film of slipery baked rubber and dirt on the pully.

rough up the noisy pully with some 180-220 grit sandpaper so it grips better

I typed an entire description, I thought it posted... I guess I must have somehow highlighted and typed again and cleared it all. :thumbsdown: It's not as bad as "search" though. :aok:

 

Good luck, hopefully you didn't get a crappy belt. I've put one on from a cheapo parts store and it squealed no matter what until I replaced it again with one from NAPA. :shrug: It's always a good idea to roughen the pulleys up every time you replace a belt.

Its a Gates Greenstripe and its still slipping even after tighting it EVEN more and throughly cleaning the pullys. I keep looking for something locking up but all spins freely :shrug:

You may be tightening it too tight and the belt can't make the turns, try loosening it a lot and restart, you'd be surprised how loose a belt can be without squealing.

I loosened it and it quit squealing :aok: but now it sounds like a turbocharger winding up too loose or normal?? Its funny watching people look though cause of the turbo sound lol :D

 

Well an update on that as of today it squeals only at start up then stops this problem is driving me crazy! :suicide:

FYI: The dealer one is a re-branded Bando belt.

 

What happens over time is the belts stretch and crack causing the howling and squealing. No big deal considering how easy those belts can be replaced. Usually if one starts squealing, I do them all to save time later on.

Well that was the confusing part was the Gates belt was brand new and no matter the tension it still slipped at start-up so i dont know what the problem was. But the Duralast fixed it for sure :aok:
