limited slip diff

i was reading around the forums here and i thought of a stupid question, how do i know if i have limited slip diff?

Mine I know cause the orange stick that says "LSD oil only" or something like that is still there

The orange sticker on the back side of the rear diff is a dead giveaway, they generally stay put.

Find some lose dirt or gravel and spin the tires as much as you can.

Then go back and see if the tracks show both spinning or one. Or

you could have friend stand outside of the car and watch.

I've buried my rear diff a few times and drowned it a few hundred. That little orange sticker is tough!

Meh, that's not a good test. Open diffs will still spin both tires if the traction is equally distributed to both tires. I've done a two-wheel peel on dry asphalt before I got my locker, and I DEFINITELY had an open diff.

 

One other way to check is to jack up the rear axle completely off the ground, then put it on jackstands, start it, put it in gear and let the rear wheels idly spin. Get out and use a 2x4 or something to try and stop one of the tires from spinning(if both are spinning). If only one spins anyway, then it's an open diff. If you can't slow down one tire without slowing them both down at the same time, you probably have a LSD.

 

You can also just jack it up and see if both tires spin the same direction when it's in neutral with the engine off. If it does, you have a LSD. If the opposite tire spins the opposite direction, you have an open diff.

i guess i have a open diff. :furious: the reason why i was asking was because there was a 4x4 path parked at work the other day, it's all stock, when i parked next to it, mine was pretty masive. my little tonka, and anyway, i crawled under that path to check out the underneith and there was a orange sticker that said LSD gear oil only. i don't have that, and i'm sure i'm open diff. if i have my rear jacked up and i spin the tires, they spin in the opposite direction. and when i'm in loose dirt or mud or sand and i punch it, i always have my rear right tire spin first. so yeah, the off road expo this weekend, i'm planning on getting an arb air locker .
