Hello,

My name's Tony and I come from Sterling, VA. I'm 21 years old.

My dad owns our 1994 Nissan Pathfinder XE which is a 2wd with a 5 speed manual. I first learned how to drive it 2 years ago, and have been in love with it since. It only has 96k miles on it. Since we don't go off-roading, my dad gave it Michelin tires that are more for onroad usage.

Almost everything on it is stock. The last thing I remember my dad did to it was install a new fan for the air conditioning unit. Since I started driving it, I replaced the manual transmission relay (which solved our starting problems in the summer), the starter (died one day and had to push start it to our mechanic), and new front brakes (replaced almost immediately after hearing the squeaking noise). It also has a tire carrier thats lost lubricants over the years, and the rear door won't stay up anymore, and needs to be propped up with a stick. The radio has a broken display, and some interior trim on the roof has started to come off.

After reading a bit, I'm very sure that we have to replace the exhaust manifold studs, as its been exhibiting the ticking noise for quite a few years, and we did not know about it until I found this site today, but I've heard its quite expensive to do so. I'm just curious to know what are the consequences of not having it replaced. Also, there is a popping noise from the front whenever the steering wheel is turned all the way to the left or right and the car is going over a bump. Since that scenario doesn't happen very often, is it worth it to get it fixed?

Looking forward to talking with you all and picking up more information on this car, as I would like to keep it for a long while.

Thanks,

Tony

leaky exhaust will make the motor run rich if the leak is before the O2 sensor. Best to fix it when you have money, but it can be left leaking for a long period of time.

popping noise is the steering stops. They are supposed to have plastic covers on them to stop the noise if you bounce around at full lock. The caps fall off and the stoppers rub up on the knuckle (i think). Put some grease on the stoppers and the noise should go away.

Thanks for the info. I just talked to my dad and he said he replaced one of the exhaust manifolds before, but he's not sure if the mechanic did it right. He hasn't touched the other one because of the cost.

Most exhaust work doesn't cost much unless you are replacing major components. Even then, if you are going with stock parts, there are plenty used items for sale here or at the local junk yard...

Welcome to NPORA BTW!! :D

Welcome...I was wondering if that popping noise may be worn CV axels? The people here are very knowledgable and will help you immensely.By the way are you near winchester Va.?

Possibly, except for 2 things. It is a 2wd pathy and for that year, he would only hear CV noise if it was in 4x4.

It could be the front crossmember too. Sometimes the bolts need tightening...

You flatter us too much. :D
