O2 Sensor Wiring

I just got a new o2 sensor in the mail. It was supposed to be direct fit but, it's about 2' short. Being in a bind I cut the existing wire and spliced in the new o2. I got the black wire, duh. Does it matter with the 2 white wires? One is ground and one is signal?

I would make sure that the corresponding wire orients with the plug at the end, I believe it is uni-directional. I'm not sure if it matters, but this is what I would do.

If you have cut the old one before now, wait for further input...
