R50 As A Spare Vehicle

Like the title says, I'm looking to pick up an older R50. Unfortunately, I don't know them quite as well as I do the WD21 so I'd appreciate some input.

What are the problem areas or things to look out for? I'm guessing the timing belt just like the WD21s (105k mile change interval, correct?) The tranny (auto), but wasn't the radiator cooler issue solved? I don't recall a lot of R50 owners installing aftermarket tranny coolers. I'm guessing the strut assemblies for wear and sagging and the Bose stereo if it has it.

Anything else I need to be aware of besides the obvious that applies to any used car?

Also, I'm considering this one, but does anyone know how to check if the air bags have been deployed or check to make sure the sensors are functioning??

Thanks much.

The airbag light will generally come on(unless someone removed the bulb) if there is any issues with the system at all from my experience with equipped vechiles(not r50's pacifficly). The shot on the bumper of that is dead center it looks and generally sensors are closer to the mounting points. To only be a bent bumper it proably wasn't a hard hit to begin with and you wanted(well your lady want's IIRC since it is actually to be for her) to give whatever you get a little more beef in the front anyway. More of an excuse to!

Good idea, B! :aok:

Also, that looks like a pretty solid R50. Love the colour. :D

As for issues, you listed the most common ones. Check into the gas filler tube recall for sure. As for others, I'd definitely suggest upgrading the front struts (KYB takes the cake IMO). Check the O2 sensors (prone to failure), front sway bar links, bushings in the rear (control arms, sway bar), and steering rack bushings.

If anything else comes to mind, I'll post it for you. Cheers!
