Question for those with Thorley Headers

My Thorleys are great and I love them. On the drivers side they sound great, fairly deep and growly. However on the passengers side they sound awful: a more high pitched and ricy revving sound (especially at higher speeds or under fast acceleration).

 

I'm pretty sure this is coming from the area the pipes slip into each other underneath the truck. I did not have this welded or anything, and would prefer not to have it welded just incase I ever need to take them off for anything.

 

Is there a way to seal this connection without welding it?

are you sure they can't be removed if welded?

My 89's are welded and they still come off if you unblolt them form the collectors and the midpipe.

 

It would be a good idea to weld these but if you really think you musn't;

you should cut 4 evenly spaced slits into the outer pipe so that it will compress onto the other pipe when you put an exhuast slip connector clamp on it. fill it with High temp rtv (400deg+ rating) before you put it back.

somebody me. You are totally right MY1PATH. It just didnt click that they were bolted together under the collectors also. That was like a revelation just there. haha

 

I believe I will get them welded in that case. be about $20 at a local welders you think?

I would tack it on the vehcle and then take it down to do a nice job all the way arround.

I'd rather have a cheap one that would crush or puncture rather than than one that will send the impact up to the manifolds and crack them.

or better yet run closer to that fist xmember so that neither can be an issue.

you certainly can, forgive me, I was meerly stating how I would do it for a better weld outcome

but after all it is only an exhuast weld it just has to be air tight lol

lol, no need to forgive you, you always do a great job answering my questions. It just worried me for a second that I might have to take them off to get them welded. Alright, now to find a decent priced welding shop...

 

by the way I'm still loving my hubs. all my non-motorhead people are fascinated by the way they lock in to the axle etc. lol.
