Tach issues

When I bought my Pathy the tach didn't work at all. Since it is an a/t, it really didn't concern me that much. After having it a few days I took it out for a trail test, really just making sure the 4wd worked. When I shifted into 4 hi my tach immediately started working. After a few minutes I shifted into 4 lo and the tach quit again. When back in 4 hi it started working again but it would jump around occasionally. When back in 2 wd it will work for awhile then jumps around a bit then quits again. Occasionally when I start it up in the mornings it will work for a few minutes then quits. I figure there is a break in the wire somewhere. I would think it was near the transfer case shifter, but why would it even be routed anywhere near the shifter? Has anyone experienced this before and if so, where did you find the problem? Thanks.

The 94-95 are prone to the tach giving up. Mine would jump around all the time when I got it. I just replaced it with one out of my old truck.

I couldn't tell you why it works in 4wd.
