5 speed tranny replacement

Hi Folks,

 

I have a '92 Pathfinder 4WD w/5 speed tranny. The tranny is on its last legs (growling very loudly in every gear but 4th).

 

Any recommendationa on a shop on Washington State (Federal Way, Tacoma, Bremerton, etc) to do the job?

 

What's a fair 'guestimate' of $$$ ?

 

Also, I was weighting the pros & cons of "new vs rebuild" on the tranny. Any opinions? (I've heard some horror stories with rebuilts)

 

I have no intention getting rid of my rig. I've owned her since new. She's been there for me when I needed her ... now it's my turn.

 

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

IT DEPENDS WHO REBUILDS IT. SOME CAN DO AS WELL AS A NEW ONE AND SOME SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT BACK AND SHOT.

I can't recommend a shop ion your area, but 10 years ago I had a dealership rebuild the tranny and replace the clutch,etc on a D720. Total cost was about $1200 and I had a warranty. If you don't get any solid recommendations, you may want to consider the dealership route.

you sure its not the throwout bearing? a growl to me is like a howl which isnt grinding...so if its doing that and thats it i'd think either throwout or main...I'm not sure how you check the main though without ripping the tranny apart and just replacing it

First of all, I really appreciate everybodys response to my questions.

 

I'm no expert, but here's what I think is going on. Last year, I started hearing a "whirring" of the gears at low speed (except 4th). Over time it became louder ... I became aware of the TSB regarding the need to raise the oil filler hole location on the tranny case because, not having enough oil to cover the gears could cause excessive wear of the gears. Well, I immediately added additonal oil to the box by "tipping" my rig. I was able to get a whole lot more oil in, and things quieted down some. But, within 6 mos, the 'growling" came back and now it's louder than ever. This is not a throw-out bearing or clutch sound. I had a mechanic friend of mine listen to it and he says it sounds like worn gears.

 

So, that's why I'm shopping for an honest, experienced tranny shop to R&R the GB, and either rebuild or repalce it.

 

If there's anybody on the forum that's had some good experiences up here in my area, I'd sure like to hear from you. I miss driven my rig. I'm afraid I'll cause some catastrophic damage at this stage so she sets in the garage.
