Lower balljoint replacement

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

Im going to replace my lower balljoint today and is there a how-to on this? I read my chiltons but that dont tell me much.

Ive replaced my upper ball joint before and that was a breeze..Im replacing my cv axle also and figured since my lower balljoint is shot might as well do them both. I know I read somewhere on here before that I have to loosen up the tension on my bar but do I still have to do that if my upper a arm is already off the frame?

Thanks guys

go to an advance search and search the balljoints with my username in there for the username category...I've got like 3 or 4 different threads where I went through my procedures...its a bigger PITA than the top but not bad...

Your upper control arm has nothing to do with the torsion bar, its main purpose is to act as a guide for the rest of the suspension... In other words, keeps things square or "aligned" thats why you see the shims behind the upper arm-to-frame bolts. Once you get the tension off the bars you can move the lower arm freely so the ball joint taper end can clear the knuckle hole without hesitation. You might also need to undo the stabilizer bar, I'm not 100% sure though. I think it depends on weather you do one side at a time or both sides simultaneously w/ both t-bars relieved of tension. Hope I could help.

I've never loosened the T-bars or disconnected anything except the upper BJ and lower BJ and then removed the hub and retaining spring...manipulated the wheel so that the LBJ could go in snug it up then put the top in and hub back on and done...

I dont think loosening the Tbar is going to help unless you lift the UCA up and hold it b/c ultimately gravity is going to pull it downwards where it is normally stopped by the spring force of the through the LCA...anywho theres lots of info on here
