Parking brake

I recently changed my brake shoes ('91, XE, 4WD). After changing the shoes I could not set the parking brake and now I can not get the drake drum off to find out what I did wrong.

you probably need to adjust the drums...if not you may have forgotten to hook up the cable that connects to the E brake assembly... you will notice 2 tapped holes in the drum...find 2 bolts that match those threads and thread them in each side probably 2-5 turns each alternating back and forth until the drum comes off...

I know I attached the cables thats all thats keeping the drum from pulling of now. I tried using two bolts, while in the process of doing this one of the pins popped out of the hold down spring, then the other one popped out as my brother tried to pry it off with a crow bar. It is as though the parking brake is set, but the handle is all the way down.

ahh good point...if your shoes were gone and you replaced with new the tension on the cable could be such that if the handle is down its set...theres an adjuster on the cable if you follow the 2 leads from LH and RH side back to the center that is the for the tension adjustment on the cable maybe try releasing that and see if that helps

After working at it for 4 hours I finally managed to get the drum off the brake shoes and I found that a spring was not intalled quite right (I don't know what the spring is called, but it keeps a metal piece in contact with the star wheel). I corrected that and can now pull up the parking brake handle.

Next quetion, 'With the adjuster screw fully retracted should the brake drum slide on easily?' I am trying to figure out if I have the wrong shoes for my vehicle. They seemed to be identical to the old ones, but perhaps I misjudged them. I don't think it should be so tight with adjuster fully retacted.
