Speedo / Odometer Dead

Need Help - My Speedo / Odometer / Tripometers are dead!

I have a 1990 SE-V6 4x4 2-Door with the 5-Speed Manual Transmission. I am runnning 31x10.5 tires on factory aluminum Triad rims. It has just under 139,000 miles on it - at least until the odometer quit!

Just before it quit, I had engaged 4-High in order to pull my truck out of its storage location. Shortly after that is when I noticed that the Speedo had quit working. Not sure if the odometer and tripometers went inop before that, but am almost positve that they all quit at the same time. Don't know if engaging the transfer case is related or just coincidental.

In addition, the Speedo had been way off before it quit. I am in the military, and while driving on Post one morning I was pulled over by Installation Law Enforcement for driving 30 in a 40 MPH Speed Limit Zone! I didn't get a ticket - the officer was just checking to make sure that I wasn't driving overly cautious due to intoxication. I thought that I was going to get a warning / ticket for doing 42-45, so it was definitely reading inaccurately.

I don't know if the Speedo is mechanical or electro-mechanical, and don't know if it has a VSS. If you advise me to check the VSS, any assistance would be appreciated in directing me to a resource that I can use to educate myself on what the VSS looks like / location / how to trouble shoot / etc.

I need to get this fixed because I can't take a chance on driving on Post without the Speedo (see above).

Thanks in advance.

I believe the 90 had a cable driven speedo. That would definitely affect your ODO and trip ODO as well. Sounds to me like something is disconnected. Try in the cluster first, as it's pretty easy to pull out, then go with the other end, which, I believe is on the T-case. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

NOT SURE ABOUT THE 90 BUT ON MY 94 THE SPEED SENSOR IS IN THE TRANNY.. THE VERY REAR OF IT.. ON PASSENGER SIDE. IF IT IS NOT THE CABLE (IF THERE IS ONE) THE IT'S MOST LIKELY THE SPEED SENSOR. EASY TO GET TO BUT VERY TOUGH TO GET IT OUT. NEW SENSORS RUN ANYWHERER $50-$100 OR SO DEPENDING ON THE MODEL. (XE, SE, LE)

I found out through various installs of the cable driven clusters that the plastic housing that holds the stick/plug/springy thing doohicky that plugs into the back of the spedometer cluster cracks I just shoved the thing in further and line it up with the back of the cluster and it worked. 87-93 models are cable driven where as 94+ are electronical. As for your cluster being way off, I have no clue as to what would be causing it. I do know that spedometer gearing (the one that plugs in the back of the tail housing on the transfer case) is different than that on 2wd.
