axle and hub question on my 2nd hand pathy

So, I pulled off my front wheel to replace a leaky brake hose. I decided to pull off the hubs and see if I could find any obvious reasons why I couldn't get it to go into 4wd.

The driver side looked fine, but the passenger side was a little different. The snap ring on the driver side was snapped into the inner groove and the snap ring on the other side was snapped into the outter grove add the axle wasn't even long enough to put the snap ring on the inner groove. Also there was alot of slack between to bearing and the snap ring on the passenger side. Almost as if the last mechanic who was in there left a part off.

I am about to drive down to autozone to buy some mile marker manual hubs. My question is why would the axle on the passenger side be shorter than the driver side? It looks so short i can't imagine how the hub would engage on he splines even if i manually locked it.

The axle shafts are exactly the same. Passenger and driver's side are interchangeable. Most likely something is in between the CV, and the inner bearing, not allowing it to extend out enough for the snap ring to work. Either that, or you just didn't pull hard enough. There should NOT be play (or very little) in the CV with the snap ring on the inner groove with the stock hubs. IT's possible that the CV was replaced, and the ring that's supposed to be on it (right by the outer joint, near the splined shaft that goes through the hub) wasn't transferred to the new shaft, thus allowing for play.

With the milemarker hubs, the snap ring should go on the outside groove, after the hub body has been installed. Then the cap with the lock/unlock dial is installed. At least, that's the installation procedure with the Warn manuals.

I'm currently trying to put in new cv axles atm, and am running into that first snap ring being off very very little (maybe 1/16th of an inch) and the snap ring just won't budge in. Since i'm running into this trouble and i probably need to work them on anyways, the manual hubs, do they go on the same way that the stock do? You mention that the snap ring goes on the outside groove, do you mean on the splines itself the 2nd groove closest to the end? Just thinkin of alternative ways if it continues to be unable to get that snap ring on. Thanks

That's what i was thinking. When i saw that the splined part of the axle extended out further from the rotor on the driver side than the passenger side, i knew someone had messed with it. I got back under and noticed that there is a gap between the outter boot and the rotor (almost 1/2"). I'm gonna be pulling it apart this weekend probably.

Thanks for the help!
