HKS intake

I've got a '98 XE 4x4 Pathfinder.

I want to increase the horsepower. For a 3.3L, 168 HP seems weak by todays standards. I know the new Pathy's have been totally re-designed (aluminum engine, etc), but still..

Changing the intake is the obvious cheap/simple mod here.

I've been looking at changing the intake to something like the Super Mega Flow kit from HKS - http://www.hksusa.com/products/more.asp?id=813

I see them advertised for under $150 all over the net. They make them for XTerras also. This is a fairly new product from HKS from what I read.

Anyone have recommendations/suggestions? It looks a bit better than the K&N upgrade. What do you guys think?

Can I expect something like 5-10 HP increase?

I think its pretty much a general rule that you'd have to change exhaust to a more freer flowing system at the same time as adding the intake to get any real benefit of more power. In one end, out the other, as they say.

any recommendations for headers/exhaust kits?

I would go with an oiled cotton type filter as opposed to the foam ones. My 27 year old lawnmower has a foam air filter in it. -pretty high tech eh?

As taken from their website...

"The HKS Super Mega Flow element is available in a 2-layer, dual density, wet-type polyurethane filter....uses a viscous fluid to attract and stop damaging dirt particles from entering your engine."

some say that a well oiled foam filter works just as well as any other ones, others are completely opposed to them. It's your call. However, another option to look into would be a weapon-r filter, which is also foam. I haven't heard anything about these HKS's though. There are no headers currently available for our pathfinders, Stillen used to make some but discontinued them. As for exhaust, do a little search (muffler, exhaust, performance, etc.), there have been numerous posts about different options ;)
