I've been digging around online since posting and went to talk to a dealership parts guy. As far as he can tell the 05+ Frontier and Xterra have a hooked up driveline right from the wheels to the transfer case with no automatic coupling in there anywhere when compared with the automatic hubs on the 04's and earlier, and with 05+ Frontier parts numbers showing up as identical to what's on the 05+ PF. I was looking into this mod if there was some possibility of changing a couple of things and freewheeling the front wheels only for some potential fuel economy improvement but it doesn't look like it's an option.
