I I brought my 94 SE into my local dealer because of some oil leaks. I am aware of the cam and front crank seal leaking. I will do that myself along with timing belt replacement. I asked the dealer to do the Rear main seal because of the amount of labor to do at home. I have a shop manual i found here some where. I was charged $800+ for a RMS replacement. When I got home I saw a crap load of oil underneath the spot where the tranny and oil pan meet. If i sound a little ignorant here please excuse I'm from the old chevy build-up days. When a RMS is changed doesnt the oil an have to be dropped? I found no evidence that anything was even touched no fresh marks, bolt scrapesor anything. I checked my manual and could could find nothing refering to RMS, nly front and rear oil seal. Is this the same thing? I was going to do cam seal and front crank seal this weekend but, now i dont want to touch anything. I called and was told to what till tues. What else can I check to make sure that it was done? dont want to go there like a lunatic and come to find out it was infact done...

yes, there is extensive labor to install a RMS...... sounds like they didn't do anything at all. the trans has to be disconnected, pan dropped, new RMS and oil pan gasket installed.... how long did they have your pathy?

i would drive right back down there and complain, and have them do it RIGHT this time. sounds like they cut some important corners.......

don't let them get away with that crap. you paid for the job to be done right....

Says right here in my FSM...

 

"Remove flywheel/drive plate"

 

"Remove oil seal retainer"

 

"Remove rear oil seal from retainer"

 

"Apply engine oil to oil seal and install it using suitable tool"

 

"Install rear oil seal retainer with a new gasket to cylinder block"

 

Nothing about dropping the oilpan. The RMS is above the oilpan if the pics are correct.

yea, the only things you have to remove is the driveshafts, trans/transfercase, pressure plate and clutch disc and flywheel. no oil pan removal.

Thats what I read too in my FSM. So, is it possible for the RMS to be of done and there is a leak between the oil pan and the case? That would be stupid for the mech. to replace the rear seal (I'll call it) and not notice the seal between the pan and case is bad? I wiped everything down and went for a ride and I think it leaks worse than when I brought it there.

all they have to do is accidentally stab that seal between the oil pan and rms housing.. trust me. i've done it.. it leaks like a pig.... lol..... or loosen the oil pan blots..... they did SOMETHING.....

did you take it in for a leaky rms or a oil leak?

 

Thats kinda scary to think about. I actually brought it in for a RMS. This whole time it was probably a leaky pan gasket. I thought it was all the same. I feel ignorant now.

Talked to the service manager and he said that a oil pan seal would be a different work ticket. I just got a quote of $640 for oil pan seal replacement. Is this worht it? or is there a way to do it without removing the front diff. and lifting the motor? I am about to do timing belt, water pump, cam seals and crank seal. so why im dirty i am hoping i can do the oil pan seals also.. if there are some short cuts for the pan please list...
