drop in filter vs cold air intake vs stock air box

Recommended Posts

I noticed a difference on a LT1 camaro I used to have with a cold air kit that took air from the front bumper.

On my old tacoma and current pathfinder I just droped in a K&N and drill a 4" hole in the front of the airbox and put in a deck plate from a marine suply store so it can be closed up if needed. I'm sure it flows very close to a expensive intake but there is very little HP and fuel economy gain.

I also have a Lexus SC400 and the stock airbox with holes and a few plates to block hot air from the engine gives more HP than the expensive cone filter kits.

Funny you should mention cutting up the airbox. I just did that an hour ago. :D

Yes in the LT1 Camaro you need a CAI because the stock piping is so restrictive.

I need to design something for my '98 Maxima now.

I went to Pep-Boys and bought a K&N look-a-like cone filter plus the 3" adapter plate, pulled the OEM air filter and box from my 2003 Pathfinder and put the look-a-like filter in. I have gone thru 3 tanks of gas since then and achieved a whopping 1.2mpg increase. Not too significant but, it beats the heck out of only 13mpg.

Ya think? I can get 15 or just better on the road but in town sucks the big one. I really lost the mpg with the 33's I put on. Plus, the KMA front bumper is kinda heavy. Oh well, at least it ain't a grocery getter any more.
