A/T lock out pin?

The other night I went to shift from D to P after a COMPLETE stop, when I hit N and P there was this horrible grinding noise. By standers thought it sounded like my starter, the truck was running so that was negated right away. I had to shut the truck off and then shift to P. When I started it back up it went away and hasn't returned...yet. Was that the shift lock pin not disengaging or something more ominous, the tranny was just rebuilt by a qualified shop. I'd go to them but he is in the hospital undergoin' a triple bypass, so I won't bug him any time soon. Any thoughts as to what to do to fix? Thanks.
