Pathy locking torque converter vs modern

I have a '92 pathfinder with the auto tranny, and ive noticed its torque converter lock-up does not work very well. I just wanted to know if this is normal..

 

At 40mph and above, i can feel when it locks up. the rpms stay mostly constant when under throttle, and if feels very direct. If i give it a lot of throttle, it will shift down and unlock and the rpms will shoot up a lot with more throttle, and it wont lock back up until i let off the throttle and reapply.

 

I recently rented an '06 Ford Escape for a long trip with the family, and its torque converter lock-up worked a hell of a lot better! i mean when it was above 40mph or so, it was always locked up no matter what gear. if you give it throttle, it would downshift then immediately lockup again, very nice direct throttle feeling. The rpms would stay steady when on the throttle, not like the pathfinder, where they would slip higher with more throttle.

 

Is something wrong with my tranny, or is this just normal for pathfinders? I just dont like the indirect feel when accelerating at higher speeds when the torque converter is unlocked, feels like wasted power, you know?

I have that problem also, like if I am going up a hill at 65 it goes from 2-5 thousand rpms constantly,

 

and it drives me crazy.

It's annoying but normal. The difference between an 06 Ford and a 92 Nissan is HUGE.

you gotta remember that the ford is 14 years newer and alot of new technology for cars has come along. so yes there is a big difference
