Auto Hub engaging in 2wd

Sorry for not being on the board lately, my back problem is getting better. So far just therapy, no surgery. Anyway I felt so good Sunday I blazed a trail in the back yard. Hence my problem...

 

Noticed yesterday everytime after reverse when going forward i hear a the-thump just one time. It even felt like hitting a carcass at 70, but this noise happens half-way thru the acceleration in 1st.

 

Tonight the the-thump turned into a whirring sound. When turning off the road to inspect, the noise stopped before I could pull over. I plan to remove hubs and take the insides out and try again. I hope this will stop the noise and prove the problem is with the auto-hubs. Unless anyone thinks I should suspect something else... like transfer case :X

 

My other question is... would the hubs be hot after driving home from work at freeway speeds if they were engaged? My hubs are not hot. I'm using this to assume the hubs are not engated.

after being in reverse, you should hear a click (2 actually but sometimes that's hard to tell) when going forward.. that's hubs dis-engaging.. whirling sound? could be anything.. cat in the fan parhaps?

 

open them up and see.. loose parts aren't a good sign.

hubs should not be hot, but the hubs beeing hot can be related to brakes overheating.

 

The wiring sound sounds like your cltches in your hubs aren't dissengaging proberly. Could be a lack of librication in the mechanisms. I have greased mine before and if your fairly mechanically inclined it shouldn't be to big a job. Hopfully you didn't heat or ruin the clutches (if so, you will probablly notice when you pull off the hubs the clutches will be warpped)

the sole reason my stuff fried. now i have MM manual locking hubs and no more worries about engaging/disengaging....

Hey slick how much did you pay for yours? If puchased new are they shipped dry (no grease)?

Took hubs off and greased excessively, test drove but still sounds like hitting a carcass on the highway when reaching about 10mph.

 

Took the guts out of the hubs little spring and out gear piece on the outside of snap ring.

 

test drove and heard no "the-thump" sound in 1st gear. That makes me think auto hubs are shot.

 

BTW. drive shaft on DS was engaged when wheel spins.

 

I guess I will run rear wheel drive till I can come up with some manual hubs. Anything wrong with driving like that? What am I looking to spin for more hubs?

An alternative to buying new manuals' would be to head to the wrecking yard and pick up a replacement set of Auto's or find a Hardbody with manuals and snag them

I've got a '92 parts car in the yard, I've heard many negative things about autohubs. Outside of convenience manual seems the way to go. What is the life expectancy of manual hubs?
