98 SE Security System

Hello all. I just picked up my first Pathfinder last week, I love her to death! BUT... The security system dosnt work. I tried the obvious, changing the battery in the key remote....Nothing..... Ive searched the internet a few times but I cant find anything specificly to help me find the problem. Is this a common problem? Because I was looking at another SE and it had the same problem. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

There isn't really much of a security system. It's mostly just a keyless entry system.

 

You say it's "not working," but what is or isnt it doing?

The key fob might need to be "activated" on that particular vehicle. There's some procedure to follow, but I can't remember what it is. It's something like "insert/remove the key 5 times in 10 seconds while holding down the switch on the door jamb that causes the dome light to glow, then rub your stomach and pat your head 5 times" or something like that.
