  1. It's a nasty/alarming sound. I know it's supposed to be the release bearing from all I've read but it has a bit more resonance to it than I'd like (without knowing for sure it's that bearing). Pain to get to a decent dealer so I do appreciate the good guesses.
  2. '01 SE, manual transmission, 104k miles. Latest clutch has maybe 60k on it and rebuild trans maybe 40k on it. Got a little chilly in the NE recently. Car cold. Clutch depressed, first gear selected, start car .. noise. I guess it was a slight howling sound but almost like a pump failing as well. Went down a few days later, same start up drill, same sound regardless of gear selected while parked .. then slipped stick to neutral with clutch released (pedal NOT depressed) and, voila, noise gone. Depress clutch pedal .. noise back. If you drive a bit and restart, no sound but after a bit of downtime, sound back at start up. Any and all input appreciated. Tom
  3. Had the dreaded Pathy radio issue. Radio and CD player is one unit. Remove. Go to google, type in pathfinder .. radio .. repair and one of the first hits will be a guy who advertises on Ebay (in California). You send him the whole unit plus about 120 and he send the thing back to you. Did it a couple of years ago and it's worked find since.
  4. Clutch slipping? Are you thinking that perhaps it's catching late .. throwing power to rears in a sudden fashion? I'll check. I don't think that's an issue .. haven't noticed anything particularly alarming on dry pavement. Just seems that goosing it doesn't help me. Came from a man. transmission Ford Exp Sport on which the Bridgestones made a world of difference on wet pavement.
  5. Always had good luck with REVOs, generally happy with them on the Pathy. However, in the wet and on (even a) slight hill .. the back end wants to slip out no matter how much I play with the clutch/gas). Do I need a little weight back there even for non-winter driving?
  6. wrt this pen like bulge in the fender .. anyone try grinding it off or at least thought about it? I haven't looked inside the fender but just thought I'd ask if it was worth tackling.
  7. Hmmm, maybe this is why Tire Rack was recommending 245 70 16s to counter any complaints they might get about 'rubbing.' Thanks for helping answer the question 'where's the rub.'
  8. Only when backing up? Maybe it's time to count the pets. Thanks for the input.
  9. Thanks everyone! Maybe we can put this in some sort of permanent file for all of us poor folks who got stuck with the stock HTs. 255 70 16 it is. I'll see what I can do about getting the Tire Rack guy to go against his conscience. And tecciball .. sorry about the install problems (sure it's not because they're rubbing(!!!haha)).
  10. Really. I did review the archives but couldn't answer my question, which is .... 2001 Pathfinder SE manual with the OEM 255/65/16 (the size excluded by AT tire makers), no mods/lifts, etc. Called Tire Rack. They will sell me Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos size 245/70/16. Questions: 1. I THINK I saw on this forum where folks were putting 255/70/16s or 265/70/16s on the 2001+ SEs (not Infinitys or LEs which I believe actually come made for a large/normal tire). Tire Rack rep said those sizes will rub/cause speedo issues, etc. Anyone experience this? 2. Dueler AT v. Dueler AT Revo ... is the Revo just hype? I've had Dueler ATs in the past and was happy with them. Most interested in wet/snow traction. Thanks everyone.
  11. It was the ridiculously expensive charger they sold to me (Verizon) when I purchased phone last August. I think it was a 'verizon' charger .. probably meant to be the solution to any car lighter but I'll check. Any better brand of charger out there? Simon noted he has a Treo .. what charger do you use? Thanks all .. I have my EE son visiting with me so I'll see if I can talk him into performing some of the steps noted above. In the meantime, guess I'll just be careful inserting the charger.
  12. OK. 1. Found the other socket. I should look around the car more often, wonder what else is there. 2. Inserted phone and charger into other socket .. worked fine until I tried closing the armrest cover. Blew fuse. 3. Replaced fuse. Tried dash socket. Worked fine if I inserted the charger only part way (enough to activate charger and charge phone). However, when I pushed the charger into the socket all the way, it blew the fuse. Charger has two metal springs on either side of prong but at tip of prong it has a retractable metal nipple .. about 1/4 inch max. Any idea what is happening when I push the charger into the socket all the way? I guess when I closed the armrest cover in 2 above I created the same effect.
  13. Thank you sir. Let me run through the fix-it protocol and see if I can narrow it down. Whoever said the Treo will not draw 15 amps has got to be correct. Probably is the socket .. I checked all connections when removing the CD changer today so maybe the fix is in. So to speak.
  14. There's a rear socket in the car? I did not know that. The lighter/charger worked with my old motorola phone just fine. I don't know what it draws. I was hoping someone on the forum had a Treo and was ready to tell me it worked just fine. We'll see. I'll do the rear socket thing .. hopefully that works fine and I'll just go to Nissan and pick up a new moderately priced socket for the front. As I have the thing apart now for the CD changer (who doesn't), it's good timing if that's all it is.
  15. Plug phone into charger, plug charger into lighter and ... pop goes the 15 amp fuse. Any ideas?
  16. Thanks for putting that in English, Q. It can get a little confusing for audio novices. Couple of questions: 1. The Alpine 9856 says it's Ipos and Sat ready .. I take it then that puts it on par with the Pioneer and Kenwood decks that are Sirius or XM ready? 2. Does your Pioneer dim when you turn on your headlights or offer the option? If so, which model did you go with and is it hooked up to the stock Pathy speakers? I liked what I saw in the 4800MP from Pioneer. Thanks Oh, by the way .. what is that "Warn 0%" thing for near my login name?
  17. I can do without the flashing display lights and pictures .. dimming capability would be nice as would easy Ipod hookup. Ability to turn off the funny display pictures/graphics would be nice as well (Alpine seems to have that option). I do NOT plan to install new speakers or amps or whatever. Will just buy harness adapter from Crutch. What have you seen, installed or liked ....? Time for Bose (whatever it is) cassette/radio head unit and CD changer to go. Thanks.
  18. Thanks kids. Hey, Trainman, that is one excellent forum referral. Not what I wanted to read BUT it was actually useful. Can't beat that. I had a 90s Maxima that also ran into a Bose speaker/head unit problem. Yup, a pain to deal with. Guess I'm stuck with sending the CD portion to Clarion and replacing the head unit so I can at least have volume control. Funny how you can jump into an old GM with a Delco and have the radio work all the time .. still. It even has knobs! That part GM did right.
  19. What's the consensus on the Bose radio/CD player/changer combo .. radio volume control shot (volume decreases when you turn knob to right ..) CD player will not play nor accept CDs. Is there somewhere you can whack this thing to make it all work correctly? Or is this just a lost case and I should replace entire thing rather than send it away to have it 'fixed.'
  20. I was hoping no-one would ask that as I have no good reason. I was mentally comparing the driving charachteristics to my old Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 and, being unable to explain them, went looking for some 'facts' that might get me there. Noted the big weight difference, a lot more than I thought given the relative similarity in size (volume storage capacity, etc.). Also noted the frame/wheel/suspension differences. Just left wondering about weight allotment. Given they advertise the automatic Pathy as 55/45 .. I could assume the manual is probably about the same. Although I could be wrong so, here I am. That Pathy rear end just seems soooo light.
  21. Good point. I'll schedule the question for the next time I visit for another SES light .. which would be about now.
  22. Anyone know the weight distribution. Found a number of websites but they only list Pathy's with AT (55/45). Stock car.
  23. DJ what size are you running on your Path? Did you have to (or did you) mod the car for the tires in any way?
