  1. Thanks for all of your suggestions, but I don't have the time or patience to fight any further. Legally I can't prove that their negligance caused the other breakdown, especially since they've had it for 2 weeks and did God-knows-what to it. I will be picking up my Maxima on Saturday, so I will be officially moving on in a few days. Actually, today my wife just collected a $200.00 refund of the $900.00 that we originally spent for the torque converter from the transmission place because they felt bad about what happened. It makes me angry because they know that they screwed up, but at this point I just need to get this whole ordeal behind me. It's honestly driving me nuts. If I put anymore negative energy into thinking about it I'll totally lose it. I put so much work into this truck that it makes me sick to thinkabout giving it up, but I have to to keep my sanity. It's hard to believe that a car as great as the Pathy is can have such a disasterous weak spot. I took all of the precautions, and a problem still developed without any warning. Automatic transmissions suck! -alcohol-
  2. My name is not Aaron, but I don't fit into any of those groups either. You need a whole new category for people that did install tranny coolers, but that still had transmission problems. I'm beginning to think that the automatic transmissions on these usnits just stunk. I installed a tranny cooler at 95,000 miles and at 111,000 miles the Torque Converter was stripped. After a shabby repair and a rapid fluid evacuation, my Tranny burnt up. My life sucks -alcohol-
  3. I just wanted to say goodbye to all of those who have been helpful during the past two years, it's been fun! Long story short is that my Pathfinder is being put to rest. Max's Transmissions in Philadelphia, PA is not honoring their warranty and I am not paying to rebuild my Pathy's tranny so I am putting the Pathy to rest with only 111,000 miles. I feel a real sense of loss, but rebuilding the Tranny with a timing belt and water pump change looming is just more money than I want to throw into a 15 year old car. I really feel like killing someone at Max's for basically destroying my car, but my therapist says that I just need to let go before anger consumes me! You guys will be happy to know that I am moving onto a '92 Maxima for the time being so I am staying in the Nissan family. Anyway, thanks for your help through the years! Anyone interested in a '91 Pathfinder with 111,000 miles with a burnt up tranny??? New Tires, Muffler, Shocks, Brakes, and many more extras... pssd
  4. I need some serious help. Last week I suddenly lost all gears in my '91 Pathfinder (111,000K) and had my Torque Converter repaired by a local transmission shop to the tune of $850.00. After it was replaced, the shop said it was fine and that all was well. 1 Day later while driving down the AC Expressway, the I heard a clunk, the RPMs revved to 4000K and it felt like I couldn't shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear (lack of fluid?). I continued to drive to the nearest rest stop and the Pathy then begin to smoke as the Tranny warning light came on and Tranny fluid began to eject out of the car. After barely making it to the rest stop and calling a tow truck, I noticed that the there was burnt (brown and runny) Tranny fluid on the spare tire carrier in the back. When the tow truck came, I had no gears (reverse, drive, etc...) and the Pathy had to be pushed onto a tow truck. Did I totally destroy the transmission? Is the shop responsible for this repair? What should I do? Is there a place to get a quality used transmission? Is there a place that anyone knows that will do a quality install? I believe that the local shop is going to try to screw me when I think it's obvious that they didn't put everything back correctly or they didn't refill the fluid to the proper level. I also noticed that the gear shifter inside the car was slightly out of allignment after the shop returned the car to me. I've put so much into this car, but I fear that it may be time to move on. I've contacted my credit card company to dispute the original charge while I wait for word from the shop. Anyone have any suggestions? :help:
  5. My '91 Pathifinder SE (110,000 miles) took a crap on the road last Thursday and left me stranded for the first time in 2 years. While going up a slight incline there was a brief skidding noise and then the dreaded revving of the motor (as if in nuetral) while in drive. I thought that I blew the whole tranny up, but it turns out that it was just my Torque Converter and it was totally stripped. I took it to a local tranny shop and I am being charged $800.00 for a replacement including the tow and labor. Is this a good deal? How easy or hard is it to change out the Torque Converter? Is it a DIY job? I knew that the Pathfinder Tranny is prone to failure, but is the Torque Cnverter a common failure? Do they usually go out without any warning like mine did? All comments, concerns, & suggestions are welcomed. Thanks
  6. My '91 Pathfinder w/ 109,000 Miles is due for a Timing Belt at 120,000 Miles. I'm getting kind of itchy about it because I bought my pathy at 93,000 miles and don't really know when it was last changed. I am assuming that the previous owner had it changed at 60,000 miles. I also don't feel like doing the work. I guess I'm asking what's a fair price to pay to have the Timing Belt and Tensioner changed and the water pump replaced? I got a quote from my local Nissan Dealer for $650.00 Is there anything else that should be done then too?
  7. Yep, you are getting ripped off! I just had to replace my entire exhaust from the Catalytic Converter back a few months ago. I got a replacement muffler from Bosal for $132.00 a $2.00 gasket from Pep Boys, and did the job myself. However, before I did it, I called Midas and Mieneke in Philly, PA for a quote, and even they only quoted me $286.00 to do the job. I think Mieneke may have been a little higher at $300.00. $450 seems a little extreme.
  8. After a hellacious day yesterday, everything is now back to normal. My Pathy's battery died on the way to work yesterday and I was able to push it into a Firestone who confirmed my bad Alternator and wanted $398.14 to replace it. I quickly paid them the $26.49 cents for the electrical test and had Triple A tow my Pathy for $47.00 to my father In law's auto body shop where I ordered an alternator from a local parts dealer for $155.00 and installed it all afternoon. Total paid out (47+26.49+155) = $228.49 I guess I'm happy that I saved $169.65, although I had to take 1/2 a vacation day from work. Hopefully this Alternator lasts longer than the month that the other one lasted. Shouts out to Tom's Foreign Auto Parts on EBAY that refunded my money for the Alternator that blew in 30 days (it was only $50, I had to take a shot!). I also want to yell at Nissan for the location of the Pathy's Alternator. It's only 3 bolts, but getting to them stinks! It's like working blind in there.
  9. I am going absolutely crazy!!! I cannot seem to put this issue to rest! After a month and a week of trouble free driving, here we go again! I started my '91 Pathfinder on Saturday night and the dash warning light indicators (Brake, Battery, and A/T Oil lights) stayed on the whole ride home. The dash voltage guage read 10 Volts instead of the 13 Volts it normally reads while under load. Thought it may be a fluke, but drove the Pathy yesterday and today, and the same thing happened. The dash lights stayed on the whole entire ride into work. Does this mean that the "new"/"used" Alternator that I got off of ebay is bad? Why would it work for a month, and then quit? I checked the belt and the connections and everything seems fine. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Could these dash lights signify that something else may be wrong? How much does a place charge to check the charging system on a vehicle? Any suggestions before I take the Alternator out and replace it again?
  10. I have a '91 Pathfinder with 109,000 miles, and I have a noticeable high pitched squeel coming from my front wheels. I changed the brakes and rotors about a year ago and I don't think that's the culprit. Also, the squeel doesn't go away by applying the brakes. What are the signs that the wheel bearings are going? At what mileage do they normally require service?
  11. Well, I'm back again. This is becoming quite the saga. I just replaced my Alternator on Saturday with a new/used unit from a wrecker off of Ebay. Only paid $50.00 including the shipping, so I figured may as well go ahead. Now I have a new Alternator and a new Battery. On Saturday, everything was well after the change over and there was no sign of anything wrong. Sunday went by and everything was fine. I went out and started the Pathy this morning and all of the warning lights stayed on for like a minute after start up. In addition to the warning lights, the voltage dash guage on the read like 8 volts while the engine was idling. After about a minute of letting the engine idle I put her in drive and pulled off and then the warning lights went off and the voltage guage jumped to 13 volts and everything ran normally. Any suggestions? Should I chalk up this morning as a fluke? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
  12. Good Morning All, I replaced the battery in my '91 Pathfinder SE and I am still getting the same symptoms as before. When turning the key to the start position without cranking, the new battery reads low, like only 8-10 Volts. After starting and while under load, the battery reads around 13 Volts, but shortly thereafter 3 inutes or so, the dash indicator lights start flickering and flashing and the Voltage drops to somehwere between 6-10 Volts. Then after a minute or so under load the voltage spikes back up to 13 Volts. Usually it stays up around 13 Volts for the rest of my 35 minute commute. I changed the battery, so does this sound like a bad alternator, or a bad cable somewhere? Also, would a bad cable cause the fluctuations that I am getting. I don't want to go out and replace the alternator just to find out that a bad cable is causing the trouble. Also, when replacing the battery, I looked at the cables and they seemed fine. Is there a usual spot on the cable that goes bad that I should check? Thanks in advance for all of your help
  13. Good Afternoon All, For the last few days my '91 Pathfinders SE with 108,000 has been starting normally, but a few minutes after driving, the lights for my dash indicators (Brake, AT Tranny, Oil, and Battery) have been flickering on and off briefly. It doens't feel like the car will stall out or shut off, but I am a bit worried about it because I don't want to get stranded anywhere. I think it may be the battery about to go because it looks really old (it's one of the old fill w/ water kind). Battery voltage is reading a shade less than 10 Volts. Anyone else have any sugeestions before I replace the battery? Could it be the alternator, I've seen guages flicker when they are about to go? Could it be a short in the ground or Wire Harness problem? Anyone had a problem like this?
  14. I have a '91 Pathfinder SE and I am seeking more HP and better gas mileage. I came by an advertisement for a Turbonator and it supposedly does the following: "Turbonator is a non-moving vortex generator that goes inside your air intake hose, right after your air filter. The Turbonator's airflow dynamic is designed to produce a swirling, fast-burn effect in the combustion chamber to create finer particles of atomized fuel, allowing better flame propagation and more complete combustion." Has anyone had any eperience with this product? Does it really work? For $69.00, I'm willing to try anything that will bring even a slight improvement, but I don't want to totally get ripped off. Any suggestions???
  15. Does anyone know where I can get some replacement Exhaust Hangers & Mounts for a '91 Pathfinder? My exhaust pipe is rattling up front ahead of the catalytic converter and the noise is almost unbearable. It looks as if the old mounting spot and hanger rusted off. Has anyone got a detailed fix for this?
  16. I have a '91 Pathfinder SE Automatic with 104,000 miles on it. I Installed a Trans cooler and remote filter last year as preventive maintenance on my Pathfinder because of a hard shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. The hard shifting still remains, but recently I've noticed that I can't even shift out of park without pressing the shifter release button in front of the gear selector. I would say that I have to press the shifter release button 9 out of 10 times before moving the gear shift out of park. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Does this signify tranny problems to come? The owner's manual says that this could be caused by a low charged battery, but my battery meter says it's at 13 AMPs. I've also noticed the orange power light on the dash has come on a couple of times (seriously, only 2 times over the last 4 months) over the last few months, and when it does my tranny feels like it is hunting for a higher gear, usually stuck at high rpms in 1st or 2nd. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated? Is this the beginning of the end? Should I begin looking for a new truck?
  17. I installed a Perma Cool Auxiliary Trans Cooler and Remote Filter Kit in series with the stock set up in my '91 Pathfinder to lengthen the life of my late shifting transmission. While my late shift has subsided, I've noticed that I am now leaking tranny fluid from the remote perma cool tranny filter that I mounted in the front of the engine bay. It seems as the the filter is leaking from the in/out hoses at the top of the filter housing and from where the filter housing attaches/screws into the filter. I've used teflon tape on all of the threads and tourqued as hard as I can, has anyone else had any leakage problems with the perma cool unit? Any suggestions?
  18. I've got a Sanyo FXCD-1100 in my '91 Pathfinder SE. It's got Cassette and CD in a single Din unit and the sound is great. I also replaced all of the speakers with Kenwoods. Crutchfield rules!
  19. Real quick, '91 Pathfinder SE, which line is entering and leaving transmission line? Please indicate by saying "driver" or "passenger side" instead of "left" or "right." Thanks.
  20. I just received my Perma Cool Tranny Filter and Tranny Cooler from JEGS. However, the instractions are a little vague. The picture on the filter box says to run everything in series and the filter should be connected after the stock cooler in the radiator and before the aftermarket cooler and then back to the tranny. I guess I'll mount the tranny cooler in front of the condenser, but where in the heck should I mount the the filter? Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone mounted one these before? Any pictures?
  21. I'm still having sporadic trouble shifting, but I have learned to time the shift of the Tranny and I now ease the shift by temporarily taking my foot off of the accelerator. I ran the diagnostic on the tranny, and I got nothing but 10 equally flashing lights. I believe that this means that there is nothing wrong. I have an appointment with the dealer on Saturday for a complete fulsh and fill and I have purchased a Perma Cool Filter and Tranny Cooler that I will install inline with the stock cooler in the radiator after it's flushed. I may also have the dealer do a tranny diagnostic just to make sure as well. I believe that some may have misunderstood which lights are blinking on my dash. The orange light on the power mode button on the dash is fine. It is not blinking abnormally. However, the green light in the middle of the dash that indicates that the truck is in drive always flashes and then goes off after like 15 minutes of driving. One more thing I did want to ask is how are people bypassing the stock tranny cooler? I've been told by many people that bypassing the stock cooler will only cause problems because aftermarket coolers will cool efficiently when the car is moving and air is coming through, but that they will not cool effectively in traffic when the car is standing still idling. I was told that you need the stock cooler and the radiator to aid in the cooling process.
  22. Please excuse my ignorance. Does anyone know what the black chrome bars are called on both sides of most SUVs that aid passengers getting in and out of the vehicle. For lack of a better term they are step up bars or side rails. Are these available for a '91 Pathfinder? Where would I purchase them? Any ideas on the costs? Does a '91 Pathfinder have body mounts for these? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  23. I want to install an auxiliary tranny cooler and filter on my '91 Pathfinder and bypass the stock tranny cooler inside the radiator. However all of the instructions that I've seen posted on other sites have instructions for adding the tanny cooler and filter after the stock radiator. Not bypassing it, but actually using it, but adding the cooler to add effectiveness. Has anyone successfully bypassed the stock configuration and just used an aftermarket cooler and filter? If yes, can you post the instructions?
  24. I need serious help. I am the new owner of a used 91' Pathfinder SE 4WD (Automatic) with what I think is a slight transmission problem. My Pathy drives fine except that when shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd, it shifts very hard and it seems like the shift point is too high. For instance when shifting from 1st to second, the shift seems to occur at like 3500 RPMs. The shift point is also 3500 RPMs when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. This doesn't sound natural as the engine seems like it is revving too high. Also, shifting from 3rd to 4th is more smooth as the RPM's are only around 2700 RPM's. I've already added Lucas Oil trans fix, and the fluid level is fine. My Pathy has 94,000 miles on it, do these tranny's start to have problems this early? Will a tranny flush cure this? I heard that there is often a failure with the Transmission oil cooler, can I check this or is this something the dealer has to do? If it is the tranny oil cooler, how much can I expect to pay for a repair? I heard that there was some kind of diagnostic code to diagnose tranny problems, has someone posted this? If not, can someone send me the procedure? Oh yeah, one more thing that I noticed is that sometimes the colored dash light that illuminates what gear you are in (P, R, N, D, 2, 1) often blinks and flashes on and off when I'm in drive. Sometimes it stays off for a short period of time. The light never seems to do this in any other gear. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
