  1. that's exactly where mine is rotted. I took it over to a friend's just after I bought it, and he mentioned two things: rust on frame above the rear wheels (I have a couple of fist sized holes), and issues replacing the starter.

I might be able to have one of the guys I work with weld plates onto the frame (I work in a machine shop at a plastics plant, but I only machine the plastics), but it'll probably be mid to late winter before I can afford to have it done. I just overhauled the front brakes, and am dealing with the engine losing power no matter what speed I'm at. I just got a fuel filter and will be doing a full tune-up this weekend. hopefully, that'll take care of that problem.

all in all, still a good truck for $700.

What is this "rust" stuff you speak of? (Says the man from Texas.) :tonguefinger: :D

  2. G'Day Folks,

I'm actually writing this post on behalf of my brother-in-law, who actually owns the sick beasty in question. He has a 3L 95 Pathy with an obscure problem. The truck will start OK (sometimes a few turns to get her going, but seems to fire smoothly).

It will then come up to idle and be fine idling for, oh, about 45 secs. The she starts to sputter and spit, and will eventually cough out, regardless of how much right foot you give her. He has recently replaced the alternator and had the battery tested. On odd occasions, he can actually get it to run like a kitten and has driven it as far as 20 miles once, but then the same issue surfaces. We both have a mind to call it a fuel delivery issue, but we're both to cheap to buy the tool necessary to diagnose fuel-pump pressure. In addition he has changed the fuel filter, and tried it without the air-filter installed installed. We're both fairly handy when it comes to vehicles (him more-so than I), and have chalked it up to the fuel-pump, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else had had the same the issue, and if there's a cheap fix for it.

Oh, and I have checked the self-diagnostic LED's under the passenger seat, and it tells me 'All is well'....go figure.

Your coolant temp sensor (or the wiring to it) has probably died.

But if you're too cheap to spend the $10 for a fuel pressure gauge, you're probably going to be too cheap to replace that. I advise you to sell the truck and get something that's "cheap" enough for you two to work on. :P :tonguefinger:

  3. Can you tell me the breakdown? '89 was 2 door only?

Was '90 2 and 4 door or one or the other. Is the rear suspension different from '89 to '90?

    Thanks

89: 2 door only, 4 cylinder was Z24I, 6 cylinder was VG30I ("I" is for throttle body fuel injection).

90: 2 and 4 door available (2 door '90s are rare), 4 cylinder became KA24E, 6 cylinder became VG30E ("E' is for multiport fuel injection - throttle body injection sucks, IMHO), minor interior trim changes including different instrument panel (IIRC). Late 90 production has remote keyless entry and alarm available, may have been standard on SE.

Other than the above and some other minor stuff, there isn't really any significant differences between an 89 and 90. The 90 versions will make more power because of the fuel injection system differences.

  4. Could be bad front caliper on the side opposite of the pull. Could be bad wheel cylinder (in the rear, again side opposite the pull). Finally, could be bad compression rods or rod bushings up front.

    Translation:

First, many thanks to all of you for your help.

The only thing I did not understand is "centerlink"; I do not know what this is.

    Thanks again for your replies.

Another thing, I do not know what "idle speed control" on my ECU means and I wanted to know if it was used for {something} (sorry, I don't know the word "servait", and can't find it in my French dictionary - GP) to put on "high".

    ****

[The centerlink is the big beam that connects each tie rod to the other and to the Pitman arm. (yes, I know, that's horrible English, but that's the best way I can put it in French. - GP) If that is worn or damaged, it can cause your problems.]

"Idle Speed Control" sur votre ECU est ce qui détermine le taux de votre moteur pendant que votre véhicule est à l'arrêt.

[idle Speed Control on your ECU is what determines the RPM of your engine while your truck is stationary.]

    Translation:

If the centerlink is your problem, member Hoohaa on this site has reinforced centerlinks for sale.

As an aside, someone needs to burn down the French Academy. They make it difficult to use imported words in French without resorting to stupid fabricated terms. No offense intended, of course. :D

My apologies to all for taking so long to translate posts - I am not a professional translator and French is actually a bloody difficult language to get right.

    Translation:

When I had the alignment done, the tie rod was not bent.

The next day I went offroading; the first climb was fairly difficult (crossing bridges and holes) - my friends told me to stop because the wheels "started on the right and left very violently." (sorry, I just don't know what to make of this - GP) That's when we saw the right side tie rod was bent.

Is it really this easy to bend tie rods when going offroad?

If so, are there reinforced tie rods I can get?

  8. Yes i have do it.

    We have re-aligned the "parallélisme"

After we have note that the "biellettes" of direction was twisted

[OK, so you had an alignment, but you noticed that the steering tie rods were twisted?]

[is it a problem with the front wheels, rear wheels, or both?]

[is it a camber or toe problem?]

  9. Translation:

OK, it's nice that you want to help me!

I'll start again, but this time in French.

    I installed a 3" body lift and a 3" suspension lift on my Terrano 1 V6 (WD21 Pathfinder to us - GP).

I do a lot of offroading with this but ever since I [installed the suspension lift], [whenever I drive offroad] I have the wheels "go around in all directions".

In fact, they (open and close violently at the level of parallelism).

Has anyone else had this problem?

[i'm still not quite understanding what the problem is. It sounds like a problem with the suspension. Do you have pictures of the problem?]

[MWS asks if you had a wheel or suspension alignment completed after installing the suspension lift. This is necessary after such a modification.]

(I knew my high school French would come in handy for something other than reading Peugeot service manuals.)

  11. I have a Haynes Repair Manual for it, but I think it's wrong... they show a few parts that are either in a different location or simply don't exist on my truck (eg, I have a 1990 Pathy VG30E w/ a box air filter, the 1990 Pathfinder Haynes manual shows, and has instructions for, a circular top mounted air filter *shrugs*) That and... well... at the moment I don't know where it is *blushes*

Haynes manuals are best for jack padding and firewood. Some of them contain bad advice, a few contain advice that if followed could destroy your vehicle.

There are no TBI VG30s in 1990 US Pathfinders. We're ALL MPFI.

  12. Not really.

"My fan clutch is fine"? Well, fan clutches can go bad in an instant and he didn't state how long ago he replaced or checked it.

In fact, I had a Hayden go bad on me two years ago - a week after I installed it.

Moral of story: If the obvious part wasn't causing the problem, time to check and DOUBLECHECK everything else. Again.

  13. I've not mounted anything on my Pathy but about 5 or so years ago I had an 81 Bronco that was my offroad vehicle & I had mounted (screwed it in) a Fobus Roto Paddle Holster to the right of the steering collumn under the dash. I kept my Glock 30 (sub-compact double stacked .45) there when I went offroading deep in the mountains on old logging trails & strip mines back home in WV (there are many cookers of Meth as well as many many Marijuna growers to look out for). The way it was positioned I could keep my left hand on the steering wheel while grabbing the pistol with the right if need be.

Also I wouldn't mount those 2 shotguns in your vehicle for the simple fact that the barrels are too long. I would go with an 18" Mossberg 500 (or maybe a home constructed 15" barrel) with a pistol grip if you are wanting to mount them on the roof as apposed to simply having them laying around the back end. But just my $.02

PS if you have any other gun related questions you can go to thehighroad.org It might be a little more helpful (BTW I go by Offwhite on that board)

18" barrel is fine. 15" unless you go through the SBS process will land you in jail as it's a Federal Firearms Felony.

18" shotguns are called "cruiser guns" for a reason - because they're the right size to fit in a police cruiser. Those shotguns pictured above are just too long to fit in the Pathfinder in any way they'd be easy to access. If you put a 18" barrel on them, you can use any of the dashboard mounts that are available to police to mount them.

  14. You mean the 300z's that got the VG30*D*E ?

No, the most the VG30E in the PF/HBs got was 153hp and 180lb/ft. The Z31 300ZX non-turbos (VG30E) started out at 165hp and 174 lb/ft of torque. They got 5 more HP in 1987. The Z32 got the DE, and it *started* at 222hp.

Um, didn't you claim you were importing JDM and other engines at one point? Why don't you know this? :D

  15. The rationale when the law was written was that diesels were "more polluting" and converting a gas vehicle to diesel would result in more pollutants. The exception was that you could convert a gas vehicle that was offered as a diesel to that diesel powerplant as it would be an EPA certified configuration. That's *their* logic, not mine. And to clarify, I would *love* to have converted that Jeep, but I had (and still have) to stay legal.

The 83 Caprice was available in a diesel from the factory (the ill fated Olds 350 Diesel), so your 83 could be original, or it could be converted to use the Olds 350D, legally.

  16. I imported R32 R33 RPS13 EG EJ FC FD and many many other JDM cars. I have a broker that gets me all of the legal information I need...

I would like to know where you get your information. If its not from the EPA the Feds or the US customs agency, then it cant be as good as mine... I ddint pay my broker over 60k to go ask the locals if it is legal... He went to the source and got me all of the information I needed , and some.

P.S. That must suck to get audited on a regular basis....

I got it direct from the EPA about two years ago. I called them to see what the legality was of converting my Jeep Grand Wagoneer to diesel. Long story short - the answer is "no" and there's a bunch of regs and laws that all say that.

I do some contracting to government/defense contractors. Any time there's an irregularity in *their* bookkeeping, *I* get audited.
