  1. Some like the badging, some don't... me, I like badging, even if it was not original to the car. I picked up this little badge from flea-bay ($11 + free ship), and will get it added after this weekends car wash...

I believe this is original to a Fronty, so the text block size is slightly larger than that used for the `96 Patherfinder SE... but it will still look nice on the tail's lower right corner.

  2. Nice looking Pathfinder! They sure do look good in black. I'm about to get Fleury's lift, so I'll let you know how that goes.

Thanks, I not real used to black yet, as it isone of those colors that show imperfections from a mile away. Looking forward to reading your thread on your Fleury's lift.

Just so you know, my aluminium plate is 1/4"... not 1/8...

    Cheers.

Noted, typo and mis-info on my part.

Plus is just as strong if not stronger.

I ran into a cypress stump with it doing about 15mph. Stopped the truck. Scared the bejezus outta me. Didn't even scratch the powder coat.

  3. So the next item I added to my new Pathfider was a skid plate. Since the factory plastic splash guard was missing, all-but the frame that is, then the decision to add an after market skid was obvious. I went with the 3/16" thick steel plate from 4x4parts.com. The 45lbs "beast of burden" I was warned against this purchase, and at the same time it was recommended that I change my order to the Fluery's 1/8 inch Aluminum plate... too late, as when I inquired wiuth 4x4parts,com about ending my order, their reply was a tracking number for my new plate... so I decided to deal with my decision. Here is the new plate prior to install...

...and this is all that remained of the factory splash guard set-up, just the frame...

Removal of the factory parts revealed an new challenge; I have discovered that I will need to replace the rack-n-pinion unit due to torn boots and a slightly leaking unit. I need to replace the struts as well, so looks like a full front end R&R may be in order while I am at it... this will also be a good time to decide on what, if any lift I might wish to add...

What fun, looks like the Pathfinder and I are going to get well acquainted with one another... The frame holes on the factory parts matched up with the 4x4parts skid, so installation was pretty straight forward...

I imagine at factory hsights, holding 45ibs with your weak arm, whilst trying to thread the new 10mm bolts will never be any easier... albeit a strength draining process, the plate mounted very nicely in place.

The tires were going to be up next, but I may need to wait till I get the funds built up for the much needed suspension work...

  4. This is my first Foreign car ever, and as such I went with the R50 Pathfinder (SE 4X4). That introduction can be found here for historical reference:

    http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/41865-going-to-look-at-96-this-evening/

Images from the original night I cedided to buy the car...

This not going to be too much of a build thread, as it is a rework thread. For a car that has 224,000+ miles on it, it drives out exceptionally nice, and everything functions as it should. Yet there are some items that will require immediate attention. More on that as I go throught this process. My end game is to have a vehicle I can go overland and on moderately insane trails... no rock crawling for me. I want to see more of the land than just what can be viewed from the black top highway.

    * New tires utilizing the stock SE rim. Will probably stay with the stock size at first. Cooper Discoverer is where I am aiming.

    * Replace window deflectors

    * Add front skid plate (4X4 Parts)

    * Usual maitenance (oil & filter, air fliter, fuel filter etc)

    * Unsure on lift (?)

    * Struts & shocks look to be original equipment...

    * Roof basket (if only to get the spare tire out from the rear of the car...

Aside from the maintenace, the first item that I decided to tackle was the after market window defelctors. While driving, two of the deflectors would flap in the wind. Upon closer inspection the deflectors were also cracked in a couple places, dry-rotted from age I suppose... I figured the adhesive would release pretty easy, like most adhesive tapes do over time...

Negative! and to make matters worse, the deflectors were stuck directly to the window seals... I suppose in an attempt to "save the paint"

Three of the seals looked like this...

    IMG_9023_zpsncmpkhfb.jpg

New window seals were looking to run somewhere north of $300, so I went with the AVS option and paid $47 for replacement Auto Vent Shades from Amazon...

    IMG_9027_zpsgz941rby.jpg

It turned out real nice for what it is; a functional cover up...

    IMG_9029_zpsemdoeddi.jpg

I'm going out now to see what awaits me with the skid plate install...

  5. I have searched some here and on google trying to determine if in-cabin air filters can be added to a `96 model (?) I just found the reference to filters being available in newer Pathfinders, but there is also reference to a procedure to add the filters if yours did not come with them...Albeit a dead link to the "how-to-install" procedure. Can these filters be added to a `96? If so, does anyone have an updated "how-to" link? Thanks!

  6. As I venture into uncharted territory (going off-road), I was curious as to what other 4x4 sites that Pathfinder owners like to visit(?)

Pirate 4x4 is pretty cool, albeit extreme on many many topics... Yet there is a Nissan dedicated section with a Pathfinder topic here and there. I am not much for rock crawling, but more of a trail rider/adventurer, so what other forums might I look for?

  7. Seen in this image, I was peeling off the dried and cracked window deflectors, and as luck would have it, chunks of the window seal on both rear windows came off with the stick'em used to hold the deflectors on...

    20160502_190501_zps99mfjlh7.jpg

Any idea where to start looking for these channels? The ones I have found were something north of $130 each side... I'm tempted to just touch up the seal, and put new deflectors back on... Any help would be much appreciated.

  8. I will be sure to get a quote off of fleurys website for an NPORA sticker, thanks. So, before I went, I printed off the Carfax for the vehicle, which indicated that there was an open recall for the car. It was the recall for rust in the left strut tower, otherwise, the Carfax was squeaky clean... As were the strut towers when I looked them over before buying the Car last night. Yes, it is official, I am now a new Pathfinder owner. I will need to do some running around tomorrow to register the car with the sate, and get insurance, otherwise she is all mine.

We are expecting some awesome a55ed weather this upcoming weekend, and I have lots planned for the Pathfinder... servicing and detailing etc etc etc Can't wait!

  9. Admittedly I overlooked the strut towers when looking for rust... I have a new appointment to see the vehicle again, and as luck would have it, the bank gave me the money. I should be the next owner of an `96 R50. More to post when I know it. Thanks for the help and suggestions... can those NPORA stickers still be had? I'll need one for this Pathfinder... assuming of course that the strut towers have no cancer.

  10. Speaking of tires, I was looking at either factory 265/70R15's or 31/10.5 15s... Since I am new to the world of 4x4's, and have chosen the Pathfinder to make the leap, I would like to make as many "right" decisions as possible. As I start to convert my base vehicle over to a real nice budget-build off-road vehicle, yet still use it as my daily, I will not have much room for trial and error... does that make sense?

Hopefully with the bank on my side, I am going to get this Pathfinder... The drive experience was far better than my 1998 Dodge Dakota (192,000mi).

  11. This `96 is in really nice shape, what with all the years of nicks, bumps scratches and rust (spot)... KBB, based on what I deem the condition of the car to be in, says $1700 bux, so a used car loan will be off the table. If I really want this deal, I will need to secure a signature loan. If I go sig loan, I would have to make the loan for a little more than the asking price, as I will need to put 5-new tires on this car. The 4 on the ground still have some life left, but the spare is dry rotted... might as well start with fresh peace of mind.

Then again, I could grow some patience and see if something else will come along... kind of roll the dice and see if a better deal will come along. A co-worker told me that yesterdays $1000 used car, is todays $5000 car, and he thinks the deal is good, and I should go for it.
