Can't Stop Front End From Shaking at Certian Speeds

Thanks for the replies. I guess my next step is an ailignment. I read where someone posted on this forum said if you take it to a regular ailgnment shop you were wasting your money. They said the only place that could do it right was a Nissan dealership. I cannot remember the reason why a regular ailignment shop couldn't get it right? So dealership or anywhere? -

A update on what I have done so far. New tires and balance. I replaced the strut rod bushings. I noticed when replacing the strut rod bushings that there was no rust and the factory bushings were not in to bad of shape. It only has 85,000 original miles. 0-50 mph drives perfectly smooth. 55-75 mph it shakes BAD. I want this pathfinder to be my daily driver. So, what do I need to do next? Thanks, brc -

Thanks for the info. After you put all the bushings and tie rod busings in I would assume you may need a front end ailgnment? -
Can't Stop Front End From Shaking at Certian Speeds
brc19761 replied to brc19761's topic in 90-95 WD21 Pathfinders
I finally was able to get under the front end and did a thorough check on the entire front end. The thing that stood out the most to me were the shape the bushings that on the piece that holds the lower A arms. The piece had two bushings on it and the end had threads and had a nut on the end. These two bushings were rock hard and had signs of decay. Would this cause the truck to shake at higher speeds? I also noticed a small bit of slack in the steering, but tie rods seemed ok to me (but I don't what ok would mean). I checked the torsion bars. The driver side bar you could see the teeth at the end of it were not completely in its slot. The passenger side bar looked like it was fully flush with no teeth showing. But it was the same way on my 1997 Nissan hardbody 4x4. Which by the definately needs a new passenger side tie rod end. I don't know if any of this helped. Is there anything I am overlooking? Can you buy new bushings at a local autozone or is it a dealer part? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, brc -

Thanks for the replies. I bet it will be a tie rod or bushing factor. Just have to find the time this week to look at it. May get a chance today. But Thursday will definately have the time. -

Thanks so much for taking time to reply. I haven't been able to even jack the truck up and look at anything yet. I have a two bay shop to pull it in, but everytime I have attempted to check it out this week after work the weather has been a factor. I live in South MS and we have been dealing with severe weather for the last couple of days. They had a F-2 tornado come through yesterday a few counties above us. Now everyone is dealing with flooding. But where I live it will not flood. I have had the truck for almost two years. I have drove the D21 Nissan trucks my whole life. I had been on the lookout for a WD21 Pathfinder for a while. I couldn't find one anywhere for a long time. I started looking online and everything I found was either too far away to look at or had 250,000 + miles on them. Finally, I found one on cars.com that with no pics, but said it had only 72,000 miles on it. I figured of course it was a rebuilt motor. I contacted the owner and he said no the miles were original. He had bought the Pathfinder two years earlier from a doctor who kept it garaged. When I finally went to look at it I could not believe the shape it was in. The interior looked brand new. It was a LE so it had all the options. The leather seats looked new. The four wheel drive worked. It has a couple of dents and scratches on the exterior. I bought it and when I got it home I jacked it up and there was no way this truck had been an off roader. Everything looked new and it had not been pressure washed. The owner gave me a maintenance book he had been keeping since he bought it in 2010 (I bought in 2012). The timing belt had been changed, all the fluids, and the sparkplugs all done at a Nissan dealership. I have been working on it a little along. I wanted to keep it original b/c of the shape it was in. I put on new brakes. I replaced the factory radio and cd player ( b/c the radio worked but the cd player did not) they looked like one unit, but they were sperate. I replaced it with a 1999 altima radio that had both tape and cd. I just replaced the speakers finally b/c the others had dry rotted and sounded bad. I received so much info. from the great people on this forum. Just like the door open icon stayed lite up on the dash. I asked on this forum and was told to raise the latch on the back tailgate (or whatever it is called and it still works to this day. The Cruise control stopped working. I made a post and it was the plastic piece had broke where the gas pedal touches the cruise control module. Same thing with the rear brake lights they would not go off. I made a post and it was the plastic piece had broke on the brake pedal that touches the pin that turns them off. That is just a few things the people and this forum has helped me and saved me a lot of cash. Even in this post I realized what was wrong with my 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4x4. The steering wheel has got a lot of slack in it and it is tough keeping the truck straight on the highway b/c of the steering wheel slack. Now I know tie rods (thanks . So, on the front end issue I will check out everything that was given to me. I am a diy person and I like doing things myself. But if it beyond my "paygrade" I will give up and take it to a professional. It is a clean little Pathfinder that still has a lot of life in it and I want to keep it up as best I can or my wallet lets me. I have thought about things such as a motor mount being broke, but I am pretty sure it's not that. I have even though about the drive shaft being out of balance. You nice people just give me the great advice you have in the past and the presant and I will apply it the best I can. Are the bushings the rubber pieces between the parts on the front end? Sorry for such a long post just wanted to explain things as best I could and to thank everyone and the forum. By the way I bought a 2008 Pathfinder with low miles on it in late January and technology sure has come a long way on the Pathfinder. I do not like the new Pathfinders. They look like station wagons and are more like a cross over suv. I think nissan messed this up. But that is what people are looking for now and I see a lot of them on the roads. brc -

Thanks for all the replies. I do have some questions to your comments. I bought my Pathfinder almost almost two years ago. It only had 72,000 original miles on it and it now has 84,000 miles on it. Everything on it was original. It even has the original window sticker price in the glove box. No rust at all on the frame or body. The tires and lugnuts are oem. I know this may sound like a stupid question, but what would worn bushings look like? The truck is 20 years old and no matter what the milage I know that things like rubber can become britle and start to decay. I will also check the tie rods but there seems to be no play in the steering wheel. When I was getting the new tires put on I thought about going on and getting a front end ailignment. But I wanted to see first if the new tires would solve the problem. You can let go of the steering wheel and the truck goes perfectly straight down the road. It is not wondering to the left or right. What would be the benefits of a front end ailgnment? Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I will check each one mentioned. brc -
Hi, I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4x4 with only 84,000 miles. Since I bought the truck it will start shaking and shimming between 55-70 mph. I rotated the tires. Had the tires re-balanced four times. I have jacked the truck up and everything felt very tight. I couldn't find any thing loose. I bought brand new Good Year tires this week and I thought it may have solved the problem. I thought the old tires may be out of round or something. But I left on a trip this weekend and when I hit the highway and interstate the same shaking was there. It makes things rattle in the cabin and you can see the hood shaking b/t 55-70 mph. It is in perfect alignment it just shakes and shimmies. My next thought was shocks, but I hate to keep spending money and can't solve the problem. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I don't know much about front end parts and what to look for. All I know is that I checked everthing and nothing was loose. There is no bent rims. Just looking for some suggestions. Thanks, brc

Who makes the dvd players in 2008 Pathfinders
brc19761 replied to brc19761's topic in 2005-2012 R51 Pathfinders
Thanks for the reply. I just found the answer to my own question . It has to be a nissan remote control. They work off of a certain signal. Guess I will be visiting ebay. thanks -
Hi, I just bought a 2008 nissan pathfinder with dvd player, rear fold down screen, and head phones. It came with the factory remote control, but the previous owner left the batteries in the remote. The batteries caused severe corosion that got onto the circut board of the remote. I tried fixing it several time, but it would not work. The remote controls all the dvd player functions. I do not have a touch screen. So features like play, stop, etc., will only work with the remote control. I know I can buy a new factory remote on ebay for $40-$50. I was wondering if a universal remote control would work. I have searched the web and cannot find who makes the nissan factory dvd players. That way if I used a universal remote I would know which code to use. Thanks, brc

Thanks for the replies. I will find out if it is a niece or nephew on valentine's day. When I bought my 1994 Pathfinder LE 4x4 I asked a similar question in the 90-95 forums. Everyone mainly responded two things (1) the transmission cooler had problems causing the transmission to overheat (2) frame rust. I can't believe Nissan still has problems with the transmission cooler's? The problem with the timing chain does that usually happen at higher miles or can it happen any time? I have heard that my 97 Hardbody's KA24E four cylinder can have timing chain and guide problems. Thanks, brc

Hi, I just bought (paying for a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder SE 2wd for my Mom and Dad. My sister is expecting her third child. So, the Saturn Aura sedan they had would be a little cramped for everyone. I did not want to buy a crossover I wanted something with room for seven, and frame with the ability to haul. I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder and a 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4x4. This new Pathfinder has way to many buttons for me. I was wondering what common problems I need to watch out for. It has 69,000 miles on it and I purchased a three year 36,000 mile extended warranty. How many miles can I expect to get out of the 4.0L. What are the good aspects of the new Pathfinder. Thanks, brc

Thanks for the response. I test drove the truck yesterday and you were exactly right. It stood for Fuel Efficiency +. The salesman said that the motor was designed to with direct injection for better gas milage.

Hi, I usually post in the1987-1995 pathffinder forums. I am looking to buy a 2007-2012 Nissan Pathfinder, but still keeping my old pathfinder. I have been mostly shopping online for over two weeks and just hit the dealerships this weekend. What does the Fe + stand for on some of the Pathfinders. I just knew if I googled it I would find the answer, but I could not find it anywhere on the net. I am thinking it may have something to do with types of fuel. Thanks, brc

Thanks for the info. I pulled the entire gage cluster out yesterday. Cleaned all the contact points. Plugged all the wiring harnesses back in the back of the gage cluster. Every thing worked except for the tachometer. It doesn't work at all now. I rechecked the connections to the back of the cluster to make sure they were in the right position. Still not tach at all. Like most things I try and fix at least it was working before I fooled with it now it doesn't work at all . Thanks in advance for any info or suggestions.

Hello, I know this is a Pathfinder forum and I usually ask questions about my Pathfinder here. But this post is about my 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4x4. I do belong to a Hardbody forum and posted my problem about my tachometor there, but only one reply. Here is the problem I have the 4 cylinder KA24E in my 1997 Nissan Hardbody. Here lately my tach. has been messed up. It works. When you start it up the tach. is right about where it is supposed to be. But when you go to shift gears and drive the tach. is reading way to high. For example, I was on the interstate yesterday and at 70mph it was running over 5,000rpm. It usually runs about 3-3,5000 rpm at this speed. Most searches I come across say replace the tach. on the instrument cluster, but this was mostly for tachs. that didn't work at all. I also read that the tach plugs into the distributor. I unpluged what I thought was the right wire and cleaned it with electrical contact spray, but that didn't do anything. Is there any solutions to try to fix a tach that works but just reads to high of a rpm. I am going on a trip this weekend and I don't want to blow my motor up . The motor has 130,000 miles on it and has been extremely well maintained. I bought it new in 1997 so I am the oringinal owner. If anyone has any ideas, comments, or insight to the problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I have alway known about the vin # since I was a kid b/c my Dad owned a body and paint shop. I would wrint down the vin #'s for him and he explained what the letters and numbers meant. My Dad owns a 86.5 D21 and It was made Japan. My first D21 was a 1990 and it was made in Syrama, TN. When they started making the D21 Harbodys here in the US was the steel made here in the US or was it shipped from Japan? The other thing I was trying to point out is since the Pathfinder was always made in Japan, that something may have been wrong with the steel they used. Since the Hardbody was made in the US since 1990 all the way up the current Frontier maybe the steel here in the US (if it is not shipped from Japan) was just better. I have a 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4x4. That was the last year the Hardbody was made. I also thought about the salty seawater being a factor when the WD21 were shipped here in the US. The Nissan Titan is Made here in my state of MS. They are made about 200 miles north of me in Canton, MS. I believe I read somewhere that the Frontiers will start being made in Canton, MS. I thing the plant in TN is re tooling.

Ok I have a question. I was lucky enough to get a 1994 Pathfinder with no frame rust at all. I assume b/c it spent its entire life in the Southeast US. Before buying my Pathfinder I used the net to see what things to look out for on the WD21. All my search results came back frame rust and the transmission cooler. Before purchasing the Pathfinder last year all I have ever owned were D21 Nissan Hardbody Pickups. I know that the D21 Hardbodys were first made in Japan and then eventually were made in TN in the US. The Pathfinder (from what I have read) was always built in Japan and a few other countries I can't remember the name's of. It seems to me that the Hardbody frames don't have as much of a rust issue as the Pathfinder. Since the D21 Hardbodys were eventually made in the US and the Pathfinder was always made in Japan. Is there anyway the steel they used in Japan to make the Pathfinder frame was somehow different than the steel made to the Hardbody frame? I was just curious b/c of all the frame rust issues I hear with the WD21 Pathfinder. Brian

"Help" Need Factory Radio Diagram "Bad"
brc19761 replied to brc19761's topic in 90-95 WD21 Pathfinders
These are the pictures of the oem radio on my 94 Nissan Pathfinder front and back. I would like to thank towncivilian for the fsm link and how to post the pics (by the way how did you get that link for the fsm?). I would also like to thank the previous posters for their links, input, and info. OK on the EL section of the fsm under radio diagrams for 6-8 speakers (I think it is on page 58 or 59) that diagram shows my factory plugs and wires. But you see in the pic of the back of the radio there is a factory adaptor that plugs into the large plug listed on page 58 or 59 on EL sec. of fsm. This is for the cd player which I don't need. But it also has the power antenna wires. This is why I could not find the right color codes b/c I was looking at the wires shown in the back picture of the radio. The tape deck and cd player appear in the pics as one head unit but they are actually two seperate units held together by the mounting brackets. The radio is a clarion the cd player is made by sony for nissan. My delima is which set of wires should I wire the new radio into the ones loacated in the fsm or the ones located on the adaptor in the pic? My radio comes in today and I surley don't want to tear it up. Any info on which way to wire it up is what I need. Thanks so much -

I just took pictures of the radio and loaded them on my computer. But I don't know how to put them in the reply box. How do I do it? -
Hi, I have searched the web for days. I have also searched this website and I cannot find the correct factory radio diagram and wire colors and what they go to for my 1994 Pathfinder LE. I have got a lot of results for the colors and what they mean, but they do not match mine. I have the clarion model PN-9661H radio and tape unit, but it also has the factory cd player. The tape deck unit and the cd unit are completely seperate, but they look like they are made together. Mine appears to have a factory adaptor plugged into where I assume if it just had a tape deck to accomodate the cd player. Guess I need the colors and what they control for the adaptor b/c mine has a factory power antenna and this would be where the wires are located for the power antenna. I ordered a newer version nissan factory radio from ebay. I also ordered the correct (I hope:) wiring harness for the new radio. The wiring harness is supposed to be here tomorrow and the radio this Friday. I have my pathfinder disasembled in my shop waiting to wire it up, but I cannot find the right factory wiring diagram for my original radio. I tried to download the factory service manual from the website but it must be messed up b/c there is nothing to download. If anyone has any info. on the pathfinder's that came with the factory tape deck and factory cd player it would be greatly appreciated. If I confused anyone with this post don't worry b/c I am confused myself .

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if it would be best to go look at a radio say at a salvage yard to see the actual size of the radio to see if it fits. Or can you measure your old one and see the pics of a newer on ebay and if it gives measurements go by that.
