  1. Its my compass! lol. Still its rediculously HOT! Im def going to Sourgrass. It should be cooler there! OH and Yar1, YOU SHOULD COME! Did you get off work? Hopefully! Its gonna be sick! Hella Nor Cal pathys here are coming. XplorX4, me, Joebob, maybe Msavides( he SHOULD come because its a kick A$$ trip). Come and join us. With numbers, we'll kick a$$. Not saying we dont already but we do! lol

I am still on the fence. I really should get some more miles on my diffs before I give them the harsh treatment. But I am ichin to go wheelin and since Frank Rains is closed not going to be able to scratch it any other way.

  2. yeah, red confirmed it, piglets ecu won't work on your truck.... lets say $300 plus the 5 speed trans from piglet :D

Sounds good to me let me know when you want to pick it up. I am in no hurry but I can be if you are.

  3. hmm, i think through previous drunk conversations with redpath88, he said as long as it is 5 speed to 5 speed, auto to auto, the ecu's will work, i will confirm this though.

hehe..... i was going to keep piglets spare 5 speed for mini, or in case king needed a transplant, but i will consider that option...

lets say $400 until we know if the ecu's are compatible :) i have a vaca comin in 2 weeks and i need to do some transplanting.. PRONTO

OH! and froggy...... that is an outside temp gauge with the wind direction. ;)

That may be correct transmission wise since the transmission uses a separate computer. But I think after studying the wireing diagram we discovered that the auto transmission borrowed some of the wires off the ecu to handle shift control and other misc stuff, That hinted to maybe there is at least some wiring differences between the two. However There is definitely a difference between a throttle body injection ECU and a tuned port Injection ECU. and last time i checked a 1988 only had throttle body injection. Not sure if they made a different socket between the years but the electronics I know wont work.

ok let me know what you decide.

  4. Remember technology is an only as good as the Human Developing it. So even technology has the human factor in it.

Ok. I know that technology is a good thing. We are always growing and stepping it up. But I have seen movies where technology will eventually lead to our downfall. That's an over exaggeration of an idea. Personally, I love technology BUT I dont trust it 100%. With that in mind, WHAT IS WITH THIS!??!!

  5. i tell ya what, call it $300, plus, i will give you piglets ecu.... she's a 5 speed :)

how about 300 and the spare 5 speed you were talking about. I don't think piglets ecu would help me very much since it is throttle body injection. If the socket on the ecu is the same I might be able to use it. But I have a hard time hacking up a know working part.

Btw. I only took one other thing off my parts pathfinder. It was the pinion Nut. for the rear diff. I did not take the diff apart. BTW If you want my old LSD and my old auto locking hubs I will toss those in. You may find a buyer for them.

  6. From my experience, lockers are useful when one or more of your tires are in the air or losing traction. If you're on truck hill climbing, there arent really much ruts on that hill nor your tires should be in the air. So you would have full traction to the tires anyways making the lockers sorta useless. Like Dean said, traction and steady is your friend!

Lockers will also keep both wheels on the axle rotating at the same speed. with an open diff or even a LSD the tires can rotate at different speeds causing the vehicle to go toward the side that is spinning faster. This is only my take on the concept since I have not actually wheeled with my lockers yet, and have a pretty limited wheeling experience.

  7. Huh? You can totally do Truck Hill without lockers! At least, you could the last time I was there. It wasn't moguled or rutted at all.

Truck Hill isn't about lockers; it's about steady progress, weight transfer, tire tread, and contact patch (i.e. traction).

I don't think I've ever needed to use my lockers on Truck Hill. I don't understand why you think you'd need to.

The point is: Go do Truck Hill now! Be careful not to put too much faith in a locking diff to get through every obstacle. In many cases, it may not help.

My thought is to use the lockers only when I can't get through an obstacle. I may use the rear when wheeling but the front will be used once I am stuck. It will make me a better wheeler to use them like a recovery tool such as a winch. I figures the locker would give me better traction when climbing. I know that our pathfinders 4 wheel low is pretty low (unless you are saying they are not low enough.) Truck hill looked to me like the dirt was loose and that i would have a hard time keeping traction going up. I probably should have tried it first. However having the recovery equipment will give me confidence that for some reason I get stuck I can get myself out.

  8. where is the clutch solenoid, is it near the compressor, and how do i jumper it?

the clutch solenoid is on the front of the compressor. there should be 2 wires coming from the front of the compressor make sure the wires are good and there are no breaks. follow the wires back and it should go to a pressure switch on the ac lines. when you locate the pressure switch just unplug it and use a piece of wire to connect the 2 contacts in the plug. with the ac on and the key on you should hear a click from the solenoid on the front of the ac compressor

  9. hey, mark, how is the parts pathy's ECU? is there any chance i can borrow it to test it on king to see if his is up the spout?

Nothing wrong with it that I know of. Unless the rats messed it up. if you want to borrow it that is fine. Make me an offer on the pathfinder. I certainly would do not expect anything near $800 since it does not run and there is no telling what was stolen off the thing. was thinking more of the $400.00 range. I know pick n pull was willing to pay $150. I have all the paperwork from the engine repair shop and the transmission shop. Let me know. I Have been looking for a bad ecu to scavenge the connector off of. Thought about taking the one off My parts pathy but could not bring myself to ruin a perfectly good ecu. even if i can't use it since mine is a 5 speed.

  10. Still won't keep me from trying. Although upper fremontia white rock looks more my style anyways. just want to have a bite at truck hill. I knew I did not even have a chance without lockers.

    Mark

Truck Hill at Hollister? You don't need lockers for that. You need gears.

You need lockers for upper Fremontia/White Rock trail.

  11. well, i have put in an offer on the pathy we went to see yesterday. it is beautiful (except the front end) inside and out. not 1 door ding, no scratches, fully loaded SE..... real nice truck, and runs like a dream. quiet as a mouse. all wheel disk, so i can do a disk conversion on mini (full axle swap) ....

All the power to ya. Since you seem to be collecting pathy's you may still be interested later.

  12. you gonna take on truck hill? I finally saw it and staying far away from it. haha

Truck hill will be my first order of business with the new lockers. I will be going camping the first week of July in the Sonora area but that will not be much of a test, But that won't keep me from trying.

  13. awesome! well, if you want to sell me the complete (what's left of it) pathy you have in the backyard, then i'd take it. king is an auto, and his ecu may be bad.. also, i could poissibly swap you for the 5 speed i have in piglet as payment?

Could always use another 5 speed. All though I have a brand new one so as long as I take care of it by changing the oil and using the correct oil I think it would last me quite a long time. I would love to have the back yard space back. Ofcourse when working on my pathy it is nice to have a parts car handy. I am almost done with upgrading my pathfinder as soon as it is done I will not be needing the parts car.

  14. wow mark!! that was fast with the lockers and air!! did you end up installing the lockers yourself? can't wait to see it!

as for your parts piggy int he backyard, ida bought it, but everything YOU want to keep is what i NEED lol. especially a motor, and preferably rear disk, so i can convert mini me to all wheel disk like king :crossedwires:

i'd LOVE to go wheelin, but king is still sick..

I had to abandon the gear swap. pinion and 3rd member length are different between the 90 and the 91 do to the lack of abs on the 1990, so all parts are pretty much there. not sure on the engine though. not sure how many parts were stolen when it was parked. I guess the block and the pistons should still be good (kinda hard to steel them without pulling then engine. If I can't find someone to take the whole thing I will probably pull the engine as a spare but the tranny I have no use for since it is an auto and mine is a 5 speed.

Me and a friend (who had all the measurement tools) did it. we had to make some imitation nissan tools to complete The front. The rear was easy except for the bad shims. It was not that hard would have got it done on the 3 day weekend if it was not for the shims being bad. But I test drove it after completing it and there was no howling or abnormal noises. So I am happy.

  15. i betcha $50 the frame is bent. and yeah, they said it's been sittin a while. :(

Definitely has a bent frame. the front push bumper is tweaked and it attaches to the frame in the front.

Slick if you really wanted to buy a wrecked Pathy. you could buy mine :)

On a more serious note I am ready for some wheeling. It took the last 3 weeks But it is done. I now have front and rear ARB air Lockers. Used my new bumper as an air tank, Worked awesome!!Last week I could not work on it because the nissan stealership took forever getting the new shims in for the rear pinion. Btw saved major bucks on my pinion bearing. Kragen had it listed for 85 bucks. Got it online at rock auto for 33 bucks. and it was the same brand bearing Nissan used. If you guys want to save money on auto parts Go to Rock Auto. www.rockauto.com

Now I need to test them out. I really need to go wheeling!!! I will be ordering up the steel for my rock rails some time this week.

  16. What year Maximas are those fans from??

I think it was out of a 89 .. there was 2 fans. 1 single speed and one dual speed. I just hooked up the the 2 speed on the high speed wires. There was a resister for something on the 2 speed fan. I just removed it. I will have to take a couple of pis of the fan and post it.

When I installed it on my old pathfinder it did not have a body lift. That is awesome that I do not need to alter this on since I have a body lift.

    Mark

  17. cool! now im glad i didnt jump right on this before, keep us posted :)

Msavides - when you used the maxima fan did you use that unit or take one of these two speed fans and put it in the maxima shroud?

The Maxima fans are 2 fans in a metal shroud. It sits close to the radiator. It does not come out toward the engine. I never had any cooling problems for over 100,000 miles before I wreaked it. I have went to the junk yard and picked up another one for my new (to me) pathfinder. I have not yet installed it since I misplaced my temp sensor fan control unit. As soon as I find the control unit the fan will go in.

  18. You could be low on freon. There is a pressure sensor that will not allow the a/c compressor to engage if there is not enough freon. Depending on the temp out side sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not. to check to see if the clutch try and jumper the clutch solenoid.

    Mark

I've got a question, my a/c had always worked great, real cold, then one day after a while, you go and press the a/c button, and nothing, the compressor doesn't even try to engage, my fan selector only works on 1 and 2 also. Any ideas. I really want my a/c!!!.

And by the way, on the highway its cheaper to use the a/c, because of drag created by the windows.

  19. I just know how upset some people get and exaggerate, and no I have not heard the recorded phone conversation. I also read the same stories about Kennesaw mountain accessories (KMA) and I still ordered from them after talking to the guy on the phone. Sometimes people don't understand how important customers are to them and it takes a while for them to realize this and change their attitude. If the attitude has not changed by now then they would surely out of business by now. They must be acting civil to some customers. And remember their are always 2 sides to every story. And I have seen screw-ups from almost every company out there. Calmini took care of their screwup. I must be one of the few that does not let 100% of my decisions be effected by others. Obviously I feel that the parts were worth the chance. I mean what type of person would I be if I had a great experience with a company and heard all the trash talking about them and I did not stick up for them in some way. Besides I pay with credit card and I always have buyers protection with that. Alot of times when a company is being difficult with a return, I will remind them that I have other options for reversing a charge with the bank.

    Mark,

They have a fairly shady past too. Their parts also have the reputation of being either mis-matched to the application in question or as above, bolt holes drilled in the wrong places...how the hell? I take it you never heard the recorded phone conversation between a customer and the owner of Calmini telling him to f off after multiple problems and lengthy shipping times...none of which were the customer's fault. I see even you have fallen prey to their screw-ups.

  20. Look guys,

There are so few companies making parts for our trucks we cannot afford to boycott any of them. I have bought from all of them at one time or another. I have the Calmini UCAs, calmini panhard drop bracket, and the calmini HD steering. I love them all. They sent me the wrong pitman arm, however they sent me the replacement the very next day and I just put the old one in the prepaid box and sent it back. No problems with any of there stuff. Everything has fit perfectly. It is possible that some frame tweekage has made some parts not fit for some people but that is not their fault. you guys need to chill. If you don't want to buy from them don't. It is not like they are screwing and scamming people. I have talked to them on the phone a few times They have been very helpful and polite.

    Mark

yea...cuz there are so many options. I like how when I was looking at steering kits, (almost) everyone praised L&P & said calmini had bad customer service and their products weren't all that great..but I know one thing, I paid for my kit and it was in my hands 3 days later. Let me know when that happens with an L&P kit now...or ever. I'd really be interested to know how many people that hate calmini so much have actually purchased and installed any of their products.
  21. Closest to a direct bolt on I found was a nissan maxima fan. just had to cut the shroud brace and bend it out of the way of the steering box and reattach it up a little higher. Was easily done. I did it on my old pathfinder. I have the fan and i am ready to do it on my new pathfinder. Plus I found a fan relay/controller that would take the temp input of the stock temp sensor and it is adjustable.

Wouldn't that be nice! I've never seen a direct bolt on. All take some creativity in fabrication. Most aftermarket ones use some kind of linear zip tie to just clamp the shroud to the fins, but over time, that will lead to fin compression and vibration/noise. For long term, it is best to fabricate some kind of brackets that mount to either side of the radiator and firmly hold the shroud about 1/8" away from the fins.
  22. would about using a sprayer to spray rustolium paint in there, (after of course you clean it out) That should work.

    Mark

I think its automatic transmission fluid.

Im thinking of shooting some expanding foam inside my frame. I think I seen somebody post that long time ago

  23. So has anyone had problems with the longer bolts breaking due to too much leverage put on them from being longer. I have had a few people tell me that you are stressing the bolts and that they could break due to the arm being out further. since so many people have done this there has to be a failure for this to be true.

    Mark

yeah, when I had my pathy aligned with the calminis they had the same problem, so went to a much longer bolt.
