  1. i had three or four frat brothers make it through industrial, mechanical, and chemical engineering. but they were very intelligent and definitely not 'fully committed' to the fraternity lifestyle like myself! most of my buddies were business majors...
  2. the only switch that works consistently is the passenger front. not sure why. each of the others has partial or intermittent function: master switch (driver) - front window switches - fine. rear driver - up is intermittent, down is fine. rear passenger - nothing. rear driver - up busted, down fine rear passenger - used to work fine. now both intermittent.
  3. is kia made/owned by suzuki?
  4. I know some members list their other vehicles in the signature. And some just have multiple Pathys. Just thought this would be interesting. I have a White 06 Pontiac G6 GT. Nice engine/power/economy (when your foot stays out of it). Terrible on almost everything else. I had a 96 Sentra GXE before that. 8k miles in 2 months last summer shortened the life of that little cart. I was looking at 1k+ for inspection. I caught the dealer on a misprinted ad and made them honor it! That is the only reason I got a domestic. Only $172/month for 24 month including tax with 2k down. Unheard of for 25k +- vehicle. I will be going back to a foreign make after my lease is up. Thinking used Saab 9-3, Acura TL, or Nissan Max.
  5. I posted this in the parts needed section, so sorry for the duplicate. But can someone suggest where I can find the switch I need? Other than dealer of course. I havent checked their price, but I can only imagine. My wife keeps 'accidentally' putting the window down and then it is a pain to get it back up! pssd
  6. cinci and steve - this is exactly what happened with my 01. i drove it for at least two months with it getting worse and worse, then another month with a screwdriver in the ashtray. i only dealt with it after having to give my truck to a parking valet and being thoroughly embarassed of my beloved pathy. sssh read the fix i posted above. let me know if you want a pic. be aware of the possible safety risk involved though since you will be able to shift out of park without hitting the brake. MUST USE YOUR PARKING BRAKE!
  7. I assume that CE is civil engineering. If that is the case, you will know about the EIT and PE soon enough - after graduation. They are professional technical certification/proficiency exams. As UNC has said, you might want to look into the EIT during your senior year. It will probably help you land a job after graduation, especially if you want to work for an engineering consulting firm. The exams are expensive though. I know my company will pay for your to take the exams. I hope to sit for my AICP, which is a professional planner certification, in the fall. Engineering classes -study- + full faternity committment -alcohol- = cheating :secret: + change of major! At least that was me. I was not willing to sacrifice my Tuesday and Wednesday drinking night to do school work. It worked out ok, but I would definitely be making more $ if I had stuck with it. I was in environmental engineering (aka science of squeezing the p!$$ out of $h!t).
  8. there is the EIT (engineer in training) followed by the PE (professional engineer) exam. not sure about FE...
  9. mine was doing this too. it actually got worse and worse over about 3 months until you pretty much had to use a screwdriver to shift from park. like navy said, the shift lock solenoid - which moves a small lever allowing you to move the shifter - is not receiving the signal when you press the brake pedal. if you take the boot around the shifter off and press the brake, you can listen for the click and watch to see where the solenoid is. the click is the solenoid moving in and out. it is on the right side of the shifter. i think the part is maybe $90 or so. i used a plastic zip tie to hold the lever in the open position. this means that you can shift out of park without hitting the brake. i just make sure to use the parking brake. maybe i will buy the part one day and fix it properly. i take take a pic if you need. let me know.
  10. if they suggested a warrantee period and are now not honoring it, you should send them a letter from an attorney's office. that will likely change their tune. or you could call the local tv station and tell them your story. i am sure they will listen!
  11. i think we had similar weekends. saturday was 'boys day.' haircuts, happy meals, cars movie, naps! sunday was swimming in the inflatable pool, steaks, , family. presents - tools that i already had (nice try wifey ) and a lawn tool hanging rack. cant ask for much more!
  12. probably a bad subject, but why is this site going away? cost?
  13. thanks markus. i will probably have my mechanic due it. although, the longer i think about it, the braver i get.... did you go with the iridiums? if so, did you noticed an increase in fuel economy?
  14. Hey Pathians. Any idea on a part number for the NGK Iridium IX's for a VQ? Also, I was looking at my VQ beast this morning, and noticed that I dont have traditional plug wires. I didnt look around too much, but do I have a cap and rotor or does the new electronic stuff eliminate that also? I am thinking that I would just have to do the plugs. Please correct me if I am wrong.
  15. randy - you are one crazy SOB! good luck with whatever you get.
  16. i covet those with a manual tranny. even in traffic i prefer it. particularly in traffic. traffic is so boring. you need something to do! i drove only manuals until i graduated from college and bought a 3.0 CL (auto only). before that it was a 92 plymoth laser (awd turbo) then a 95 isuzu trouper. both pretty sweat vehicles for my station in life at those times! now an auto tranny mall crawler with double car seats is in order. maybe the next car will be a manual - i hope...
  17. i have an 01 with 48k miles that experienced the same problem for about a year. i think the code was p0158 - rear driver's side o2 low voltage. ses would come on only after highway cruising for at least an hour. it would go off eventually or when i reset it with the scanner. next time i was on the highway it would come back on. all the while, i was getting pretty bad gas mileage. about three months ago, i changed the o2 ($85 i think) and put in a k&n drop in filter ($45 i think) and now i get 19 to 20 mpg on the highway and probably 14 to 15 city which is normal. i am also jealous of the manual tranny. but my better half cant drive one.
  18. free 100 pt checks? i dont trust the dealer for @!*%. not the one by my house anyway. they will say all 4 need replaced for sure! my mechanic will know. i just dont think he does that type of work. that is exactly why i thought he would be a good person to ask for a quick look-see.
  19. red/grim - i know. get the 3 ton. my jack stands are 3 ton. i planned on getting a 3 ton. then i was in walmart for something else and saw one for so cheap. i should know better. i usually stick to the buy it once (good quality only) tool purchase rule for long run savings and reliability. i guess i just need to be reminded every so often...
  20. it is more noticeable from the rear than the front. i will have to think about where to take it to get some trustworthy diagnosis! i dont think my normal mechanic does suspension work.
  21. DONT BUY THE $16 2 TON JACK FROM WALMART! I used it last night when rotating my tires and it sucks! It moves all over the place and does not have enough lift. Only 13 inches. That being said, the set from Pep Boys might still be ok. Details: -------------------------------------------------- Torin™ Big Red All-Chrome Garage-To-Go $29.98 kit after mail-in rebate (Reg. $59.99) thru Jun 30 All chrome steel and durable. • 36” padded creeper • 2-ton floor jack • Two 2-ton jack stands • 2 wheel chocks $44.98 promo price - $15.00 mail-in rebate = $29.98 #T82207 -------------------------------------------------------- mzx - I share your hatred of Pep Boys service. Most of their techs are morons and there service managers are @ssholes. In all fairness though, managing a bunch of inferior techs and having to stand behind all their mistakes would be a touch job! A quick Pep Boys story - my father-in-law, a man I would not mess with on my best day with any weapon of choice , was getting dicked around about some control arms they screwed up. They had 'fixed it' for the second time in a month, and were demanding payment. :furious: He of course was refusing because the other manager had said it would be free due to their mistake. The situation was resolved when he jumped over the counter and told the guy that he would kill him if he didnt hand over the keys. :X He got the keys of course, after they threatened to get him arrested for strong arm robbery. He got a call about ten minutes after he got home from the original manager apologizing. I got free oil changes from the friendly manager for about a year after that! Then he quit so I stopped going there.
  22. hey pathians - for some time, my pathy has sagged slightly toward the driver's side. it is most noticable from the rear. i thought it was worse last night after rotating my tires, but i looked again this morning on flat ground, and it isnt as noticable. the pathy ride is fine, and i checked tire pressure. visual inspection of the stuts on driver's side didnt show any obvious sagging or fluid seepage. Here are some pics. Thoughs?
  23. not really important, but i bought a cheap 2 ton tonight at walmart - on sale for $16. mzx - there was a 2 ton set at pep boys for $40 that had all the stuff mentioned in that craftsman set. obviously an off brand though.
  24. transponder keys can be quite expensive, as randy noted. the dealer i bought my pathy from (who sells lots of lexus, audi, bmw, mercedes, etc) told me about an inexpensive work around for this: take the transponder out of your key with some tweasers and/or a utility knife. remove the steering column interior panel. with the key in the on position and the chip pressed against the ignition housing, move the chip around watching for the security light to go out. there is only a small area where it will work, but it shouldnt be hard to find. once you find that sweat spot, mark it with a sharpie and glue it in. that is it. this mod gives two benefits - $6 hardware store keys and remote starter mod without extra security bypass parts. negative - easier to lift the vehicle since it can be hot wired. but most thieves know which vehicles have the transponder technology and leave you alone. and your security still works.
  25. SO I AM GUESSING THAT SINCE I ONLY PLAN TO ROTATE TIRES, I CAN STICK WITH A 2-TON. THAT IS WHAT I WAS HOPING.
