  1. Gently! That's where I went wrong! For tquatier, spraying stuff in there worked for me for about...oh...2 weeks, then it had the same problem again. I would either buy a new one (for about $80) or take it apart, with emphasis on gently. Haha. After I bought a new one I thought, "Hmm, I wonder if I could fix this???" So I tried to be patient but ended up using a hammer to open it. Well, I got it open, and I was basically just curious about the inside, and then realized I probably could've fixed it and said "oh shoot!" Of course, I said something more vulgar, but this is G rated. Anyway, good luck.
  2. Guys, I can't take this suffocation, the sarcasm is too thick for me.
  3. Just to make sure...you are trying to set it at highway speeds...right? Because if you're testing it at like 10 mph it probably won't work.
  4. By no reverse do you mean "NO REVERSE" or "SOMETIMES IT WORKS SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T." I have the latter of the two problems. It goes in about 80 percent of the time (usually when I could care less if it does). But when I really need it it never engages. I took it in to a tranny shop to see how much to rebuild it and they said about $2500. So, 45,000 miles later I still deal with the problem. I have gotten used to not getting myself into situations where I have a life or death need for reverse, so it's a problem you don't have to fix right away. If you off-road a lot you'll probably want to get it fixed. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend getting stuck because then the difference between walking 4 miles to find someone or going home in a nice warm car will rely on whether or not your car goes into reverse. After much blabbering, my point is...you can live with just forward gears and an intermittent reverse. But, if you want reverse and have a few thousand you don't mind throwing at it, get it fixed. It should last you for the life of the car if you do (assuming you don't put like 3,000,000 miles on it or something) and then you wouldn't have to worry. It could be something else, like the linkage in the shifter, fluid or some crazy thing, but I kind of have a hunch it's not. I'm sure someone else will have a better idea that will actually fix it Good luck.
  5. If it's making screeches that loud I'd take the tire off and look at them to see if something like your brake rotor is getting eaten alive. Otherwise you may need to rebuild your brakes or have someone do it for you. Personally, I don't fool around with brakes and steering, if something is being weird with either of those I either check it out or have someone check it out. Those are important parts for safety. I also had trouble with genuine Nissan pads breaking apart. I was told they rust and fall apart at times. They had quite a bit of life left but broke apart...so there was metal on rotors...not good. Anyway, if it's just a little screech and not the grinding screech it could just be a stuck caliper...the thing that clamps the disc brakes down doesn't release fully when they get older and so forth and the brake hangs up slightly...just enough to be annoying. But if it's a nasty grinding noise I would for sure take a look at them.
  6. Could be a stuck caliper. You'll know when your brakes are gone...trust me. First of all, you won't be able to stop for crap, secondly, it'll make the most awful screeching nails on a chalkboard sound you've ever heard. I would take the wheels off and periodically check them...every few thousand miles just to make sure everything is OK. If you have drums in the rear it's good to do it so the cover things don't rust so you won't have a hard time removing them.
  7. I've got 175K on mine and I use synthetic and I don't have any problems.
  8. Happens to my parent's '95 all the time...my dad now keeps a key with him and Autostart to unlock the doors. But, theirs also does it in the summer, just not as often. He's also learned to leave the alarm off after a car wash. For some reason (maybe water freezing and expanding) it pops the locks and you wake up at 3am to a squealing, horn-honking, flashing light fest. It's like the 4th of July only a lot colder and waaay more annoying.
  9. With my '88 I get about 18 in the summer and 14 in the winter with commuting to and from college...interstate part of the way. If it's all interstate I get about 22, and if it's winter and I use 4WD I get about 10 or 11. Of course, when it's -5 for a high in ND it pretty much shoots raw gas through
