  1. For some reason I thought everyone knew what I was up to. I didn't really make a build thread since it would be full of people saying "No, that won't work. It's a unibody!" :stickwack: It's running very good right now but the oil pan is still leaking a lot of oil. I welded a good section of it and the flange warped.

Long story short: I put a VH45 (now a 4.6 liter and 10.6:1 compression) and full hydro in and R50.

  2. From what I've heard, there's no way you'd get a swap like that to be CARB legal.

If you're looking into this for the gas mileage aspects, you'd be much better off saving your money for more gas. I'm not one to be opposed to engine swaps, but I am speaking from my personal experiences. When I decided to do the VH45 swap on mine, I thought....hell this engine is ONLY $500! More than $11k later it's drivable and almost done.

  3. I didn't mean to say I wasn't happy with my IPFs as they always worked very well for their intended purpose. I never expected some 55 watt fogs to be blinding but they did give some extra lighting. The only issue I've had is the lights are filled with water.

Fortunately wiring up the winch is probably the simplest thing you will ever do.

  4. PDCCD...I'm sorry that I backed out of selling my ARB to you. I hope this one works out great for you.

I don't think that the IPF lights this same wiring loom that I've got but I would think they will come with some sort of wiring kit. Here's the one that I used to install my IPFs.

It's a very nice loom from ARB. I know you're trying to avoid doing a bunch of wiring. I can't remember how many watts the stock foglights are. Are the new ones your ordered 55 watts?

  5. Add to that, check any relays leading up to the solenoid.

I had an 87 Pathy that would go "click" very intermittently, sometime years in between occasions. I replaced the starter several times, figuring they were poorly re-manufactured. Finally I thought to check the relay that drives the solenoid, and found it had, like 7 ohms across it's contacts :ohno01: (let's say the solenoid takes 1-2 amps, this would be a 7-14V drop: no wonder the solenoids were unreliable!) . The relay was <$20, plucking it out of the relay box was literally easier than changing a light bulb, and most importantly, I never had the starter go "click" again.

To rule out the relay just switch it with another.

  6. I took my 02 into "the gear center", which is an arb authorized dealer and installer, to have my locker put in. It took them from 10am to 4pm to remove the 3rd member from the axle housing. They said it was stuck on there and that most of the studs got stripped in the process of removal. Does anyone have experience removing Nissan 3rd members? Is it that difficult? I'm not sure whether to be happy someone else is wrestling with it or mad that I didn't attempt it myself. I have pulled third members off other vehicles with no difficulty. The only thing I can think of is something is bent like the housing or the the 3rd member even though my pathy's been treated well and I haven't hit the diff or anything like that.

Sounds kind of odd, but they should know what they're doing if it's a dedicated shop that does this kind of install every day. When I pulled one out of Pathfinder in the junkyard a couple of the nuts were seized onto the studs but it just backed the studs out of the housing. I don't really see how the studs would get stripped. If anything it seems like they'd break off. It took me about an hour to get it out of the rear housing but this was in a gravel lot with some basic tools and some sketchy situations.

Did they give you a hard time about the install or just commented that it was difficult?

  7. I have never seen the knock sensor actually go bad. Usually there is a different problem that makes your truck try to overcompensate for and run sh!tty, thus causing the knock sensor to detect.

Nissan knock sensors are NOTORIOUS for going out. Most people don't bother replacing them since it apparently doesn't affect engine performance on the VGs.

  8. I was dealing with an out of state junk yard (can we still call them that) and explained that I wanted to swap out the stock 4:36 to the 4:63 gears with LSD. The info I had was that the Xterra would also fit and that Xterra's made more LSD rears. I was sent a rear pumpkin and front diff, both of which were marked as coming from a 2002 Xterra. I don't know if the guy made this up or not but it all looked exactly like my old units, just bolted right up and I accepted his info as being correct. If you do a search for all the posts made by rwc5s2 you can see the info replies I used to search for my new gears. This forum was my primary source for info on where and what to look for and what would work. I did run across info that 4:90's were made for the Xterra but I never pursued it since the 4:63's had arrived, been installed and I really like what they did for street and off-road performance. I imagine the 4:90's would really make the humble Pathfinder a beast. Oh well, guess I was just too impatient. I will only add that the LSD made it possible (actually pretty easy) for me to get through obstacles that I could never make before. It was also about half the price I had received to install lockers on the rig and I never wanted a rock crawler to begin with.

Please don't take what I said the wrong way. I wasn't meaning to call you out or say that you're wrong. I really do believe it was a mistake by the junkyard. I'll see if I can find a picture of an Xterra R200 and I know Dean has some pictures of an R50 R200.

  9. How did 4.9 even come up? Is there anything swappable higher than 4.6?

If in fact RWC5S2 managed to fit an Xterra R200 under his Pathfinder then 4.90s would be a direct bolt in. I still have my doubts though since the two are substantially different.

  10. Could you PLEASE get some pictures? I remember you saying your front diff was out of an Xterra and if it did indeed work it would prove a lot of people (myself included) wrong. I really think the yard mixed them up and they came off a Pathfinder, but I'm willing to admit I may be wrong.

  11. Yep, the Xterras are 33 spline. All of the "newer" generation Nissan 4x4s use the 33-spline axles. Of course you could convert to 31 spline but it's really a step in the wrong direction. The 4.6 gear ratios are 4.625s, the axles are weaker, the axles are a couple inches narrower (with one minor exception). So it's just easier to stay with the 33 spline setup. Hopefully if you find a Pathfinder with the 4.6 front gears the rear 3rd will still be there. Good to hear you're going with the ARB too.

  12. Pulling the rear axle shafts are much easier than you're making it out to be. :sssh: Once the wheel is removed, just undo the 4 bolts per side and the axle should slide out easily. Just pull it out a couple inches on each side and you don't even have to disconnect the parking break. No slide hammer is needed, and to reassemble the shafts just slide back in and the 4 bolts need to be tightened back up, preferably to factory torque specs.
