  1. super late post, I know. But I paid 300 for both the timing belt and water pump here in SD, CA. little asian place. wicked cheap. And had all the belts done because of a sqeal that turned out to be my crank shaft pulley, but because it took them so long to find it they replaced the other pulleys and didn't charge me. :-) for all the belts replaced it was 89 bucks but then the carnkshaft pulley install was ...don't remember...but that one hurt. They wanted to do the timing belt then for an additional 700... so true to the wicked cheap asian place the 300 bucks was a steal.
  2. I too used to use the cheaper gas because I thought I was saving money. but then one day my normal cheap gas station was closed to I went to Mobil and thought heck, since I'm spending more anyway I might as well spend a little more and get the good gas. so I did. And my gas mileage soared. I ended up getting an extra 30-50 miles per tanks full. which sure seamed like a lot. So then I sat down a did the calculation. I spent an extra 70 cents to fill my tank and gained 50 miles...hmm...with my gas mileage now being 14, and gas costing 2.50 (approx) a gallon ...that's really a savings of almost 9 bucks. so even though I spent a wee bit more in the beginning I saved money over the long run. I'm sticking with the better (more expensive) gas :-)
  3. I haven't taken the rear seats out, i just fold them down flat and have an old futon mattress that i trimmed to fit perfectly around the wheel wells (and yes, it folds neatly in the very back of the truck so i can still flip the seats up if i want) It's perfectly comfortable in there. I have a nice step up so it's not weird getting in the back and if i want to stand up...why the heck am I in the car? so I get out and stand all i want :-) I have rigged a "roof" coming off the hatch and can use poles or tie it to a tree so i have a little area of shade, or protection from the sun, where i can set up a chair and small table, cooler and such.... I'm really only in there to sleep. That Oztent 4 is awesome! but a 1000 bucks. ouch. and i think the one "designed" for the 2005 pathy et al is this one http://www.tentsfortrucks.com/?source=truck I think I"ll order the little one...hell, if i don't like it i can always return it...and if i do...i'll tell you all about it :-)
  4. anyone ever use one of these? do you like it? hate it? http://www.mountainzone.com/gear/suv/explorer.html I go camping all the time and have modified the inside of my vehicle to accommodate me and my stuff. I've almost completely stopped using my tent and only find that to be an issue when 1) someone else is with me and they can't fit in the back with me unless we're ok being so close or 2) I'm in a real buggy area. I've made screens for the other windows and sunroof but the hatch, I always had a problem with so I usually just close it. But then I'm a little squished. I was thinking about picking on of these tent things up. I figured for 100 bucks I couldn't really go wrong but thought i'd ask around anyway....
  5. Fact is -it's not just teenagers. It’s just a certain percentage of people who have an attitude, feel entitled or maybe they're just not getting enough attention at home or positive reinforcement from their loved ones...whatever the root cause, there will always be the guarantee that 2-5% of people are A-holes. No matter where you are or what age group you surround yourself with. Accept it. Feel pity for them. And keep smiling at them. They won't know what to do. I was driving to work one morning. It was along a 4 lane road, island in the middle kind of road with a couple of lights every 1mi to 1/2 mile... if you looked to your left you could see multi million dollar homes framed by ocean views off the cliffs of the California coast. It was a peaceful misty morning. I had the radio going and was surprisingly in a great mood for being on my way to work...when all of a sudden out of now here(!) some one laid on their horn and started riding up my butt and waving wildly from inside there car.... flailing their arms in fury...at first i thought something was wrong with my car and they were being nice and wanting to point this out to me. Maybe my tail light was out or maybe I had left my coffee cup on the roof of my car (it's possible) but as they whipped into the right lane, cut the person off who was there, and zoomed up next to me, they started cursing and giving me the finger (keep in mind they couldn't actually pass me- this is rush hour after all and there are many other cars driving the same road at 35 miles an hour) I wasn't sure how i should react. I thought about yelling back at them or giving them the finger...but you know, I was in TOO good of a mood and I didn't think some jerk should ruin it for me, so I smiled. I gave a cheerful wave at them and kept driving. A moment later, stopped at the next light, they were right next to me and the guy was finding joy in continuing his rant...so i rolled down my window, listened to a few expletives and finally said...(hahaha) "I'm so sorry you're having such a bad morning. I really hope it'll get better and you can enjoy the beautiful day" Oh, that really must have made his day, hahahah, the light turned green and he sped off in a huff...I'll never know what I or anyone else did to piss him off so much. A few weeks later, i encountered the same attitude on a different road, at a different time, in a different car... they're out there. And there ain't a darn thing we can do about it. Unless maybe it's me and I’m a really bad driver :-)
  6. Happy Birthday!!! I didn't know then but i know now...cheers!
  7. one would think so...but in my case it was a very long sorted deal and i can attest to trying EVERYTHING and nothing worked...except the struts.... it's only my experience.
  8. WOW. so green. and it looks like you guys had lots of fun. I sure miss the green trees. So Cal doesn't really have a lot of that. Makes me a little envious. maybe even green with envy -bounce- hahahaha
  9. sweet. thanks M. also found this... Pink Pet eraser (just a normal pencil eraser) Procedure: Simply rub the eraser over the areas where the wax residue is present. Only use the eraser on plastic trim. Don't rub it on painted surfaces, as it could leave rub marks.
  10. how about how to remove regular car wax from the black plastic trim ? I heard mineral spirits work without damaging the plastic. :allclean: is this true?
  11. aahhhh...a vibration... i had a very long experience with a vibration on my pathy. I, however, called it a shimmy and, mine didn't make a noises. It would occur between 50 and 70 and then as the shimmy got worse it started occuring at higher speeds. I went through the tire balancing, alignment (even though i knew it wasn't that) has my tires pulled off the rims and checked, had some bushing in the front replaced all to no avail... I checked my struts (with the gentle proding of a fellow NPORA member). and, ah- hah!...the front right one was leaking. I reaplaced the struts and poof...no more shimmy, shake or vibration.
  12. I voted as a 1 but and theoretically it's true. the light came on once...about three years ago. it's been turned on serveral times since but has always returned, with the same code i might add. No one can seem to find what the problem is let alone fix it. it's a evap code...yay for me. aren't i lucky?
  13. my remote had the same problem, sometimes working, sometimes not. I took it apart and yep... the solder joints were broken. Being cheap, and not wanting to heat up the ol' soldering iron, I just glued the puppy with a little dabbed right in the center and...good as new. it's been working like a champ for a good 6 months now.
  14. My father always told me never to touch the brake fluid unless there was a problem. I've trusted him on it so far and have never had any issues with the fluid. I had a master cylinder go on my old volvo and changed that out, no problem...added a little fluid, bled em, and off i went. If I can do that you surely can change your brakes. Be wary though, I've been to the dealer and they told me my brakes were down to 10% and yet I had them changed less than a year earlier, so they were really fine. Actually they lasted another year til the sensor went squeakin' on me. How many miles do you have on your truck? My advice, unless under visual inspection of the brake fluid there is an obvious problem- leave it alone. And check your brakes before you believe they need to be replaced. Pull your tire off and look. Follow your haynes manual or down load the service manual found in another string here on this board. They both go step by step and it's really pretty easy.
  15. i found this... http://www.autocd.com/autocd.html?q=10&gc=444&sha=0 don't know much about it though...
  16. I'm glad you brought this up. I had a discussion with the guys at Discount Tire regarding tire pressure and wasn't sure if i believed them or not. So maybe one of you guys will know. The Discount guy told me that the tire pressure listed on the inside of the VEHICLE door is the proper tire pressure for the VEHICLE regardless of the tire on the vehicle. However, I argued that the tire pressure listed on the TIRE is the proper pressure the the TIRE, regardless of the vehicle. Which is right? (Assuming were talking about daily driving tire pressure and not off road.)
  17. wow. you get 300 miles to the tank?
  18. is this what you're looking for? http://www.autopartsworld.com/1997_nissan_...mast_parts.html not as cheap as ebay- but still less than the left arm.
  19. I have 31's on my stock pathy and she rubbed and rubbed some more...ended up rubbing right through the plastic stuff and creating a flap in the well. So, i took a utility knife and cut right through the rest of it (neatly, of course). once it rubbed a little I could easily see where it should be cut. I wish i knew than what i know now...i would have heated 'em up and pushed 'em aside.
  20. I had all my belts done when i had my crank shaft pulley replaced that cost me about 170-ish give or take. and as far as the exhaust manifold bolts. i had that problem a year or two ago- I've a 97 with 115K on her- and the dealer took care of the whole thing as a recall. :contract: So I'd check with your local dealer before paying to have someone else do it. BTW: the estimate for the timing belt- given at the time they were going to do my crank shaft pulley (they said it would save me 40 bucks to do it all at once-wow. (sarcastic)) was $670. with no WP addition. I didn't have it $$ so i didn't do it-yet.
  21. what a cool idea. I had no idea such an item existed. well- at least in the autoworld. How would i go about finding out who has one? You know, without calling every garage in a 50 mile radius and asking.
  22. Why don't I replace them myself and save the $$? I promised myself that when I got this car I wouldn't work on my cars anymore. I'm getting too old for that kind of labor plus I get funny looks from my neighbors (being a girl and all) and in the end the money is worth the saved labor, pain and frustration I’d experience:-) I am going to get the struts replaced- after I call the dealer and ask them about the lifetime warranty thing (see below) I'll let ya'll know if it fixes it. btw: my tires are in perfect condition. Nice wear pattern and not too worn. "sooo if Nissan makes lifetime struts why weren't they on there in the first place could've saved this poor college student some serious coin.... " OHHHH!! I can't wait to ask my dealer about this one. They're bastards here and any chance I get to give them a hard time always makes me feel better :-) They're the kind of dealer ship that when I took my car there they would tell me this or that needed to be replaced and tell me that it was done poorly last time ...and my response was, and it was true at the time, "well, I had it done here so if it was done poorly you did it poorly and here's the receipt and you should fix it" that usually shut them up. Then there's the time they told me I needed new brakes and I asked them if they stood behind their parts and workmanship because I had them done here at the dealer less than 30k mi ago and with my style of driving there must be some defect in the product because I can't imagine they would be worn already. Go figure -over a year later I actually needed brakes...hmmm vengeful: check your tire balance. I haven't done anything to the vehicle for a week now. I'm dealing with it until the week before Xmas. I have the whole week off and will take it in then. :-)
  23. i'll add my thoughts on this even though the topic has pretty much been covered. I have a '97 and yea, sometimes when you come out of 4x the light'll stay on for a bit, sometimes not. And yes, i've read all over that if you change your RPMs or turn or break or shift it'll make the light go out. And yep, it does. Not always using the same method but it'll go out eventually- just be patient. it's all good and working the way it should.
  24. funny you should ask. they are the originals- it's a '97 and i noticed on the trip the right front is leaking. I didn't think it would be bad enough to cause the issue especially since it started leaking after the shimmy started. but it IS on my list. I hope that IS the problem! please please let it be. I've already gotten two estimates -one for 670 and one for 360. both include the struts. I think i'll go with the guys that gave me the quote of 360 but i'll bring my own struts. (why so much of a difference in price especially if the strut price doesn't really vary that much?)
