Gas gauge whackiness

Recommended Posts

hi .

i have a screwed up gas gauge.

after a fill up (and $55 bucks or so), the gas gauge

reads half tank after just 50 miles of travel.

the last half of the gauge dwindles away over the

remaining 240 miles or so that i tend to get out of

a tank.

when i first got the truck and after the first fill up

tihs really freaked me out.

anyway, it's a livable situation but would love to

find out what i might do to make it register or

progress along it's course of showing diminishing

gas reserves in a more regular and accurate

fashion.

any tips?

thanks.

joel.

It reads full and then drops to half tank or never reads full? I'd pull the fuel pump assembly and check the float. It might be binding or have a crack in it allowing gas to get inside it and sink it some. If that's not it you might have some voltage problem from the sending unit or something.

mine did exact same thing. I just got used to it. The last 1/3rd of the tank actually represented the majority of my tank.

Not sure why it does it, but I just learned to deal with it... besides, its not really that big of an inconvenience, if anything it'll help your fuel pump, cause u'll be filling the tank more often (thinking its low and whatnot).

That would be my guess. I found a short in one of my wires, mine had been reading 1/4 tank below actual.
