Wiring issues..?

Hey all,

Just got 1990 Pathfiner last week and had something weird happen last night while working..

Gauges went dead (fuel, temp etc), as did the heater motor and the truck kept running fine. Automatic transmission didnt want to shift all that smoothly (had to ease off on the gas to get it to shift). Also, once the vehicle was in the 'park' position, i couldnt get it out without pushing the "unlock" button thingy. Pulled into the local gas station and checked the tranny fluid (it was full & not burnt). Turned off the truck and checked all the fuses. Everything fine there. Truck wouldnt start after. Dash, interior, horn, radio all work. Tried a boost but no help. Cant even hear the starter selenoid click.

It was dark so i havent had a real clear look at everything, but i think that there is a group of wires running along the passenger side of the vehicle and down by the exhost manifold then to the tranny that may have gotten burnt. That will be my first look when the sun comes up.

I'll pick up a manual this afternoon and trace the wiring a bit more.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Great forum BTW.

This may sound odd, especially from a noob, but did you check you fusible links? You should have at least one connected to the Hot side of your battery. Mine has one that was loose and about once out of every 15 or 20 starts it would do what you are describing. I would just pop the hood, grab the link, and wiggle (insert joke here). I would hear a series of clicks and all would reset. Clock, radio, dummy lights would all reset. Mine was just a matter of getting it tight to the connection and securing the battery. The strap was missing on the battery and once everything was fastened down all was fine.

Just my $.02.

sounds like a loose connection. fusable link would be good place to start looking. you could have had a meltdown somewhere. i had one of those a long time ago and my vehicle acted a bit strangely but i odn't recall how exactly.. too long ago..
