Emissions question...

As I was changing the timing belt on my '87 V6 I noticed that the air injection valve box was actually rusted out on the bottom so much that I really don't think it's doing anything but taking up space and cluttering the engine bay. How would I go about removing the air injection system all together?

Now before the tree-huggers have a fit, I'd like to mention that this component didn't just stop working one day, it rusted out which means it hasn't worked for a looong time and I passed Virginia emissions a year ago so the truck runs pretty clean (plus I like birds and turtles as much as the next guy).

Would I just remove everything and cap off vacuum lines or do they need to be rerouted like running a bypass?

I wouldn't toss it just yet - until you get it smog tested with the box missing.

In CA, you would automatically fail the visual test if the box is missing.

And if I understand how it operates, it may have been working even with the hole. It's possible it was just injecting unfiltered air instead of clean air...
