Bound Bumpers

Hi All

 

The Nissan Manual for the 95 Pathy lists the rubber bumpers above the rear axle as 'Bound Bumpers'. My question is how important are these to keep the vehicle from bottoming out on serious bumps. I ask this as mine are hanging by a thread and seem to be quite soft. Is replacement critical on a vehicle with stock suspension with the Adjustable Nissan shocks?

They are fairly important, yes. If you were to hit a big enough bump and cause the axle to hit the frame, it might break the axlehousing or damage it in some other way with no bumpstops on the rear axle.

I don't have those anymore, I even unbolted the bump stop brackets... My tires just stop on the wheelwheels. Nothing crazy happens. I guess if I had body lift It may be a different situation.

Why would a body lift affect the axle-to frame bumpstop clearance?

 

I assert once again that it is not a good idea to drive around without them, but it's not necessarily gonna cause any problems for street driving.

Because in my case the tire touches the top part of the wheel well first before the axle touches the stop or frame. If the tire had 3" of more room on the top, then perhaps the axle would stop on the frame first. Just a thought.

 

Yea the only reason I don't have the bumpstops is because I lost them a long time ago, and I took the mounts off when I was fixing/reinforcing my frame in that spot.

Thanks for your input 88. I got a quote of $78 each from the Nissan Dealer. (I guess there's always the Bone yard)

 

Do you know if there are aftermarket ones available? I was also wondering if the front end has a simular bumper that should be inspected for wear and tear?

You can get generic bolt-on polyurethane or rubber bumpstops from an offroad shop, sure. Just measure to make sure they're the right height. There are two sets of front bumpstops for both the lower and upper control arms, both are replaceable with aftermarket bumpstops is needed. Daystar and Energy Suspension both make polyurethane bumpstops you can use.

 

I have a spare pair of rear stock bumpstops if you want them. They're in great shape, like new. Asking $30 plus shipping. I doubt it'll exceed $7.70 with USPS fixed-rate shipping, they might even fit into a $5.90 box.
