starter motor

Hi everyone... hey can any of you offer me any advice with regard to starter motor problems plz.

Well thats what I think the prob is on my 92terrano TD2.7 manual.

If I go for a short drive it starts no prob all the time but when I go for a 2hr+ drive when I stop and I turn the motor off it is dead as when I goto restart ie parked in the gas station for 5/10mins, I get no noise at all from the starter motor I hear the relay click as per the norm and also have all the dash lights working fine including the glow plug indicator light clicking when the plugs are up to temp as per the norm, Now if I leave the motor over night so that it is cool again I jump in and it starts at a flick of the key.

All batteries are fine I changed my setup so I run two batteries both full charge in them tho.

Any ideas on what the starter motor prob might be or my best action to try and trace my fault will be very much appreciated.

Start by checking all wiring connections, including the battery ground. I doubt thats the issue, but it's free and easy to do. It'd be silly to replace the starter and have the same problem. That said, I'd guess your starter or selenoid is the issue.

thanks for those replys...

I went out and picked a starter up arrived home and removed my faulty starter dam things not the easiest to remove.Only to find the replacement I was sold has a different housing.

Ive included the pic you can see both of them side by side,

http:// members.tripod.com/pauls-plants/DSCF0003.JPG (get rid of the space between 'http://' and 'members' to view. sorry not very good at posting pic it appears tripod wont allow hot linking of pics)

now the one on the left is what I removed the one on the right is what I was expecting to be the same.

I haven't tried fitting this impostor I assume its not compatible so I will be forced to return and hope I receive a starter that looks like the faulty one I have to replace.

Hey any idea what the impostor starter is from ? The place was quite sure it was a starter for a TD2.7 but certainly not mine  is it from a auto ? mine is a manual.

Got that all sorted works fine on short drives fingers crossed it runs when it gets real hot after a 2hr+ drive.

Not that easy getting it in tho, enough room for one arm to hold it and put the bolts in at the same time with the same hand but a bit of :furious: and got there in the end lol :D

Now just my front window top frame to tidy up a little surface rust on and then a new window goes in ready for my next trip of 6days on some remote beaches.
