The stock auto-transmission went out in my friends 1992 pathfinder. park is the only gear that works all others are like neutral. the tranny has never made any weird noises and she has never had any problems out of it but she was pulling out of a parking lot yesterday and heard a pop, . the indicator lights in the insturment cluster work. What could be the problem?

If your friend is running the stock tranny cooler (part of the radiator), that is probably the culprit. They are notorious for clogging and starving the tranny and/or allowing it to overheat. Most people bypass it and run aftermarket coolers. Sorry, but it's fairly expensive to fix the automagics... :(

Tell her to call an autosparky (automotive electrician) out to have look.

Also check the linkage onto the side of the gearbox from the shift lever.

Best start looking for a second hand trans if those two things check out to be all right.
