Guest nickr410
i was driving on the parkway 55-65 mph when i gave her some gas to pass someone. She downshifted, and never found the gear... any selection i make with the auto trans in neutral, except for park, which works. 4x4 engages, but will not move the truck. in fact, the truck will not roll (even in actual N) with teh 4x4 engaged. No noises when it happened, or since, from the trans. is it the actual trns, or somehting else? any advice? thanks! NIck
Revco
Not sure what you're getting at here...it sounds like transmission but I think we need clarification. Are you saying that D/1/2/R are not working at all in any gear? How many miles are on the rig? If the truck doesn't roll in neutral...it's almost sounding like catastrauphic failure of the tranny. Was there a noise or a boom or something?
Guest nickr410
well, i got word back from the shop that has it. apparently the radiator leaked fluid into the trans, which explains the thin, light pink fluid I saw on the dipstick, and ate the gears in the trans (?) the truck has 150,000 miles, but only 35k on this trans. unfortunatley the warranty ran out 7 months ago. CHECK YOUR FLUID, if it is not dark thick red change your raditor IMMEDIATELY. Even though I love this truck I dont think i will be putting $2500 into it for the new trans, so i will be towing it back home. If anyone is interested in a 1995 dark green pathfinder 4x4 with a PERFECT body (seriouly, there are like 2 blems on teh entire truck), perfect V6 motor (except for the typical manifold ticking) heated leather interior in fantastic condition, "needs nothing" except a trans and a radiator, shoot me an email @ CorradoNick@aol.com or respond to this post with an offer. I will post pictures as soon as I can get to the shop and take some... it is a LONG walk to Chantilly from here....
Simon
Don't give up so easily...... Maybe a used tranny can be found? A rad shouldn't cost you too much. You could possibly have it back on the road for around a thousand bucks if you can remove and replace the tranny by yourself, and do the work to replace the rad. Might be worth it with only 150K on it. Check local wreckers for availability on a tranny.
Precise1
Where do you live ? As Simon says, you could do it for far cheaper than $2500... B
lgranch
For everyone else out there, this is why you have a separate tranny cooler. Now the costly part of this repair is not the tranny. A good used tranny should be found for less than $900. The problem is the installation. This is not a short job and a tranny shop is going to want atleast $65/hr and that is the bulk of the $2500 on the quote. I won't sandbag you the job is tough, but not complicated. The tough part is the weight of the tranny and transfer case. If you really have no frame rot on the pathy and you live east of the Mississippi river then your pathy is one in hundred. In its present condition with a bad tranny its value is about $1000. If the frame is rotted then $500.

The tough part is the weight of the tranny and transfer case. See there is light at the end of the tunnel. Under $900 for a tranny. I think puttting a munaul in would be cheaper and you should consider that option too. More fun to drive as well! I have had my Pathy apart several times, yes it is a heavy job and a pain in the arse. It isn't hard though, and you and a mate could (should) be able to have your old one out and a new one in with in an afternoon. If you can re index you TB's then you can change a tranny! A couple of trolley jacks and balance and a will to save money is all you need. I made up a trolley for a few $$ to wheel my box and transfer case around on too. Even motors for that matter. You could even sling the box and TC with rope to lower it. Have some timbers on the ground long enough for you to slide it out on. After you have it/them on the ground you may have to jack up one side to get it out from under the car. Depending how high you are off the ground that is. When the thing is out it is a peice of piss to work on. Don't give up on it!
