Electrical Problem With My Turn Signals/4ways

Hi everyone, I am new to pathfinders, we just bought this 93 about a month ago. My wife called me the other night saying that the turn signals stopped working and there was smoke in the truck. As she was telling me this she said OH the 4ways just stopped. I asked her if the vehicle was still running and she said yes so I told her to drive it the 2 blocks to the house.

 

Once she got home I looked at the situation. If you turn on the signal either way, The brake Idot light on the dash comes on and a relay which is attached to the brake petal support buzzes. Unless you turn on the flasher switch in which case turning on the turn signal does nothing. the turn signal light bulbs do not light, on the dash or corners of the vehicle.

 

Today I dug into this, doing what I could without a wiring diagram. I expected to find some burn wires to fix but none were visable anywhere I could see or feel.

I dug into the dash removing the trim plates from around the column and removing the instrument cluster. all the wiring seems fine. I have not been able to get to the main trunk of the harness which is in an inclosed area next to the defrosters. The wiring under the hood looks good.

 

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I searched the archives and did not find anything.

 

My other question is who sells shop manuals for these trucks. I have not tried the dealer that would be my last resort.

My Chilton manual has a wiring schematic for your vehicle (p. 6-31) Sorry I don't have a scanner, I could send you a copy. Maybe somebody else here can?

 

It looks like the turn-signal switch and the emergency flasher tie into the same wires (gry/red - RH side; gry/blu - LH ). Try disconecting the switches one at a time to see if you can narrow the problem down. The LH and RH only share at the switches so my (uneducated) guess is that's where your problem lies.

 

One thing you have in your favor is that your lights are dead all the time. That usually makes tracing the problem easier than when the problem comes and goes.

Replace the flasher for the turn signals, then the flasher for the 4-ways. It may just be old and short-circuited.
